Pope Encourages Wearing Scapular

I like both rites.

Mass is Mass, They both bring us Our Lord. A Mass said licitly in union with the Church is always a good thing. The same Christ is at both Masses, Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity.

It is a calumny to suggest one is better than the other objectively. Some prefer one over the other, just as I prefer early morning Mass over late afternoon Mass. There is also valid Mass to be found using the Rite of St John Chrysostom at your local Byzantine Catholic parish.

I wear my Scapular. I was invested at my First Communion. I do it as a silent devotion to Our Lady. It is not predicated on worship at Mass in the vernacular or in Latin. I am pleased that the Pope has recommended the scapular devotion to the Faithful.

I am thrilled with the Holy Father’s words and I’ve noticed more and more the distinction of two separate camps – the camp of Mary – her warriors who daily pray the Rosary, wear the scapular, try to attend daily Mass, and Eucharistic Adoration and the other camp of the cultural, more liberal Catholics – some of whom don’t even know what the scapular is and have no heartfelt devotion to her messages.

Sad that many will not know the richness nor experience the graces obtained from the traditional devotions and sacramentals which urged our hearts toward a greater love of God.

Please don’t divide Catholics into “camps”. That makes it hard to reach across to our brothers in love. Many people have not heard about scapulars and other devotions, it is our job to teach them. But we also have to realize that someone can lead a holy life, be completely devoted to God, and still not wear a scapular. It is an aid, a help, but not a requirement.

I’m overjoyed the Holy Father is encouraging investment in the brown scapular! For me, though, it’s a bit of a problem. I can’t wear it all the time because I have a skin problem caused by excessive sweating. Wearing the scapular exacerbates the problem. I know some folks wear the scapular medal but I’ve heard that’s frowned upon. So, I wonder, am I better off wearing that all the time, or wearing the real brown scapular some of the time?

I think knowing Latin is a thing of interest. My parish priest celebrates latin Mass forthnightly and i always attend because i loved it, now i can attend latin Mass comfortably and participate actively. I dont know what your generation is but i’m less than 30. Put some effort in learning it, you would like it i think:thumbsup:

If you believe the messages it brings, then by all means wear it. It is your thought and the concept behind the Scapular

Scapular medals are not at all frowned upon. We must remember that the scapular is NOT a magic device.

I’ve been to a Traditional Mass before and found it quite beautiful but I definitely felt less engaged. It was more like I was watching the mass instead of actually praying the mass. Part of the problem is I don’t know Latin. I know a few words and that’s it. Not many people in my generation know it either so that makes things a bit difficult if the Pope changes anything soon which I know wouldn’t happen but could.
But I do attend a liturgy that’s very much influenced by the TM which I love. It has the smells and bells and Latin

It’s possible to pray along with the priest during Mass using a handheld missal. An inexpensive example:

On the other hand, the Ordinary Form of the Mass can be a more engaging form of the Mass for the lay faithful in the congregation. A useful book that clearly examines both forms of the Mass in the Roman Rite is the following:

I might be wrong here but I believe the Latin Mass ended in our Parish in 1972. I was six years old so I really don’t remember it but I have seen it.

As for the brown scapular, I wear it until it wears out. Normally around 4 to 6 months. There are certain ones I like because they feel better around me. Whenever I remember I am wearing it, normally because it itches slightly, it reminds me to pray. I don’t always wear it because I don’t always have one to wear. We use to have them readily available in our foyer of our church so people could take them as they needed. Now we have to ask and I normally forget to ask unless I am at the church for a ministry or function. I’m forgetful so I need reminders to keep me on track. The scapular is that reminder for me. I only take the scapular off to shower. I need one that is durable and weatherproof. BTW, how do you dispose of a scapular that can no longer be worn if it has or has not been blessed by a priest. I keep them in my drawer in my night stand but I have to do something with it and I don’t feel right about throwing it away.

Proper disposal is to burn them or bury them. I usually just burn them in a small brick grill, in the case of broken plastic objects or ceramics, a burial is easy. There is no ceremony, but I usualy, say a prayer thanking God for the gift of his helps in the form of sacramentals.

It is not a sin to throw them away, but they are sacramentals that should be disposed of with respect, and not tossed among eggshells and inedible leftovers.

I don’t see why you call the scapular a “traditional” devotion. It has never been out of use. It’s a Catholic devotion period- no need to make divisions where their are none.

The Holy Father is rightly encouraging this devotion. If I had more religious discipline I would wear it.

I wish folks would stop using terms like “traditional” vs. “liberal” Catholics. We are one Church, not like the Orthodox with different branches- well we have the eastern Churches but they fall under the Authority of the Pope.

What do you mean runned by clergy? If this is the case shouldn’t this be reported to the local Bishop of the Diocese.

Like I stated before, if this is the case why can’t their actions be reported to the local Bishop of the Diocese.

Sad to say, I have family and friends who are like this. I remember one time at Mass a young woman told her heart-wrenching story about her experience with an abortion.

I turned to my friend and said, “That was really beautiful and touching.”

“Ahh, well that is something I don’t agree with.”

I have a close family member who left the Church because of the “Too many rules” and because she thinks that Catholics hate gay people.

I’d like to say a thing or two to them but than I always think I’m being judgemental or I don’t know what to say?

All I really know to do is to Pray for them and whenever I see a Crucifix at home, Church, image, etc. I always think of Our Lord on the Cross saying, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do” and at times I think well Jesus, we do know what we are doing and I often wonder Does Jesus like what is happening in the Church?
