Benedict XVI is underlining the importance of defending marriage, asserting that without this basic cell of society, Europe has much to lose.

I see you didn’t notice the quotation marks and the smiley. 🤷

On a serious note, though; polygamy occurred in the OT, but, pertinent to your remark, polygamy doesn’t necessarily regard women as chattel. It would depend on the society, on the polygamist, and on the feelings of his wives.

Not recommending it, of course. It’s hard enough to deal with one woman without opening that can of worms. 😃

I did notice, but thought I’d make the point anyway when I had the opportunity 😃

Just because a practice is in the Old Testament is no recommendation or justification for it. And isn’t it funny the way polygamists are almost always men…🤷

Of course, polygamists are always men. Women who have more than one husband are polyandrists. 🙂

Please don’t think I am trying to show you up, but it’s a common error, given the ratio of polygamists to polyandrists, who are almost non-existent except in some Polynesian societies. Well, there’s a book title for you, “The Polyandrist from Polynesia.” :D.

You’re not showing me up at all. πολύς γάμος polys gamos, translated literally just means ‘often married’. It isn’t gender specific.

Polygyny, on the other hand, refers to a man having more than one wife, while polyandry refers to a woman having more than one husband.
 
Male and female natures and instincts are different, very much different. Yet, people want to deny that today.
