Misogynistic…or polygamous? But not, alas, of realising that society cannot advance without holding the misogynistic instincts of men in check…![]()
Same thing, surely?Misogynistic…or polygamous?![]()
Nah. Woman hater versus one who loves “too well”?Same thing, surely?![]()
Polygamy is not loving ‘too well’ - it essentially sees women as commodities or possessions or status symbols and not as equal human beings.Nah. Woman hater versus one who loves “too well”?![]()
I see you didn’t notice the quotation marks and the smiley.Polygamy is not loving ‘too well’ - it essentially sees women as commodities or possessions or status symbols and not as equal human beings.
I did notice, but thought I’d make the point anyway when I had the opportunityI see you didn’t notice the quotation marks and the smiley.
On a serious note, though; polygamy occurred in the OT, but, pertinent to your remark, polygamy doesn’t necessarily regard women as chattel. It would depend on the society, on the polygamist, and on the feelings of his wives.
Not recommending it, of course. It’s hard enough to deal with one woman without opening that can of worms.![]()
Of course, polygamists are always men. Women who have more than one husband are polyandrists.I did notice, but thought I’d make the point anyway when I had the opportunity
Just because a practice is in the Old Testament is no recommendation or justification for it. And isn’t it funny the way polygamists are almost always men…![]()
You’re not showing me up at all. πολύς γάμος polys gamos, translated literally just means ‘often married’. It isn’t gender specific.Of course, polygamists are always men. Women who have more than one husband are polyandrists.
Please don’t think I am trying to show you up, but it’s a common error, given the ratio of polygamists to polyandrists, who are almost non-existent except in some Polynesian societies. Well, there’s a book title for you, “The Polyandrist from Polynesia.”.
Yes. Thanks for the correction. I should have noticed the distinction. You’re not showing me up at all. πολύς γάμος polys gamos, translated literally just means ‘often married’. It isn’t gender specific.
Polygyny, on the other hand, refers to a man having more than one wife, while polyandry refers to a woman having more than one husband.
There, there. Maybe you just need better opening lines??The pope is on the cusp of realizing that society cannot advance without holding the hypergamous instints of women in check.
