I really like the commentary from Patheos, because I wasn’t fully on board with the Bishop’s speech, either.

I don’t like to be in the position to say, “For real Christian unity, we have to reunite as one church and that means coming home to the, Catholic Church,” but that’s the bottom line that the other writers seem to be dancing around.

Fr. Dwight Longenecker’s blog about this “Anglican bishop” was spot on and all I needed to know. If these people wanted unity, they would walk out of their churches, bolt the doors and swim the Tiber.
 
This video was absolutely incredible. I watched it right before I went to bed, and have been spending all day thinking about it. This video convinced me that full fledged christian unity is ACTUALLY POSSIBLE. Its amazing to think about.

But the thing that struck me most in the video was that it was a bunch of protestants who were saying. “We need to be united with the Catholic Church.” Perhaps not explicitly, but there you have it. Not a Catholic in sight anywhere, besides the pope, yet, there was an amazing fervor for unity.

Another side note: I read Vassula Ryden’s “True Life In God” messages almost every day. Say what you want about them, but the main theme of the messages is: Christian Unity. Jesus says that in order for Christian Unity to become realized, we must repent of our division and attain true humility before our brethren. Only then can we be reunited.

One of the reasons this video was so shocking to me is that it was like it was like an actualization of the messages that I have been reading for years. The Pope was asking God to forgive us of our division, and telling the protestants that it gives him joy that they love Jesus and requested prayers. Humility and Repentance. It was tangible on both sides. Incredible.

This Pope will be the one to unify the church I believe. Both Pope John Paul II and Jesus in the tlig messages referred to the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church as the “two lungs” of the Church. Guess how many lungs Pope francis has? 1. And its his LEFT lung, or (western) lung. Just as the Catholic Church is missing the lung of the Eastern Church. Did Anyone noticed this? This can’t be by coincidence. Pope Francis has also made Ecumenicism a priority. This is all coming together in a mysterious and providential way it seems.

Also, this is just crazy speculation. But I think its possible that if Pope Francis unites the Catholic and Orthodox churches, God will grant a miracle and restore one of his lungs as a sign to the world that this is the true church. Again, speculation. But the way things are going now, I think its possible.
 
Yes, but the unity must take place under the ONE church with the ONE true worship that was ordained by Christ Himself, the Eucharist. Inroads are being made, I suppose, I mean it’s only been 50 years since V2, BUT there is still a long way to go. God bless us all.

He is not in the Catholic sense, no, Bishop Palmer is not a bishop. However, that is his title ( eurochurch.net/about-us/tony-palmer/) and the Pope addressed him as such.

It’s good to understand that while Catholics may say “priest,” the word “priest” in a different religion or culture more than likely has a different definition.

Well, that’s pretty much what is necessary, though there have been strides made on coming to agreement on certain issues between the some Protestant denominations and the Church.

I’m not going to read the commentary - they tend to annoy me as failing to see the forest for the trees. I am confident that the Holy Spirit was at work in that room, and that the entire experience will serve to bring some people in attendance to the Catholic Church.

Baby steps, baby steps.

I don’t know - it’s not that simple. If they don’t know the richness of the church, have not been led to believe and understand the Eucharist. For many people, crossing the Tiber means giving up their entire communities, livelihood, etc. It’s not as easy or as simple as you make it out to be.

I’m not sure why Bishop Tony hasn’t crossed the Tiber yet. I wondered that while watching him, but perhaps he is committed to a more integrated Church. As a new convert, I have to say, I still listen to sermons from Protestant churches posted online and I listen to Christian radio. God doesn’t work just within the Catholic church - there are many Evangelicals who might have some of the facts wrong, but are living according to the Word way more than a lot of the Catholics I know. There is richness within the Protestant tradition that perhaps should not be ignored.

been there, done that and God is not the author of confusion or dissent.
 
As a convert I was really just blown away yesterday when I saw the video. I was Methodist but always considered myself more Evangelical than the denomination I was in. As I was drawn closer to Christ my door in was listening to people like Joyce Meyer and learning to live in the Word. It was that Word that ultimately through what can only be described as the working of the Holy Spirit that led me to the One Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I am a daily Mass attender and every day I thank God that not only did I learn to love Jesus as an evangelical I now know and love him every day though his Word, through the Eucharist, and also with his Mother Mary, the mom I did not know I had! Anyway when I heard Pope Francis with his what sounded to me like a parable about having the money but no bread for me that meant that those Christians out there that love Jesus have that treasure but they do not have the Eucharist, the Bread of Life! And as the world becomes darker we will all need each other as believers in Jesus Christ. That is my meditation on it. I would not fear this move of the Spirit! It goes without saying that the Catholic Church is the one true body and I do believe that we will all be one! Won’t it be great to welcome those Bible believing Christians who love Jesus into our pews! Come Holy Spirit!

Except by saying “brother bishop”, the term becomes used in the Catholic sense.

Which it can’t be, because Palmer is not a Bishop.

While not a Catholic bishop (because he has questionable apostolic succession), he is recognized as a bishop (holding the office of an overseer) amongst his church of separated brethren as will as by the Holy Father.

You can’t say a say that a daisy isn’t a flower because you’ve seen a rose. They’re both flowers. Our better still, you can’t say that the corpse flower is any less a plant than a tomato vine.

As opposed to those of us who sit in pews in any parish now? Are current Catholic “non-Bible believing Christians” or something? If it wasn’t for Rome, there would have been no canonization of Holy Scripture. Let’s put things in proper perspective, it isn’t Woodstock you know…

I am not sure why you are taking offense to what I said, where did I say anything about my fellow Catholics, and I AM Catholic, I am saying won’t it be great to welcome with open arms our brothers and sisters into the fullness of the faith which is exactly the journey I took. Believe me you don’t have to convince me about where the Bible came from - I am on the RCIA team and in the Legion of Mary:) I believe the proper perspective is Our Lord’s -that we all be one! As I said it goes without saying that of course the truth of the Catholic Church will have to be accepted to be in full communion with the Church. And no it is not Woodstock I seek, just the Kingdom of God:)

My apologies. Being traumatized from growing up in a Pentecostal church and being shunned by them for being Catholic now, I approach all Pentecostals with extreme caution. These are the people who can flat out deny our Lord’s presence indeed in bread and wine, yet can accept howling, shrieking, running, falling out and “speaking in tongues” as real. Sorry. I may never get over my childhood traumas. It’s between me and God it looks like.

No worries! I was never a Pentecostal anyway so other than what I see on TV I really don’t know about their churches. As a Methodist, even though I thought of myself as
Evangelical, as opposed to the more liberal and less orthodox elements that can sometimes be present in the mainline Protestant denominations, my formation was one of orthodox Christianity though not the fullness of the faith. My Methodist friends have been pretty supportive thankfully. And I guess I just want to see everyone at the table:)
