I would agree. Most women have a black dress, the same way most men own a suit.
I don’t understand why people think it looks like they are going to a funeral. People wear black all the time when they dress up.

The little black dress! There’s even a store called “White House Black Market” that sells ladies’ clothes in mostly black and white. You see them at malls.

Absolutely. Black is the most appropriate color for formal wear.

I don’t know, but to me, forcing a woman to go out and purchase a black dress and veil, which she probably wouldn’t have in their wardrobe, seems a bit sexist.

What about a woman with far less financial means than Melania ?

Would she not be allowed to see the Pope privately ?

Jim
I don’t know, this isn’t your typical meeting. It’s one head of state meeting another. There are protocols to be observed. I don’t think anyone is worried about the cost of dresses for the wife of one of the heads of state.

On the ITV news channel a little earlier they showed Melania asking the Pope to bless her rosary, and I wondered whether she had an attachment to Catholicism?

Sy,

Well yeah, we can’t all be as quick as you are to say something negative.
By post 33 you got your Trump dig in already. What does a quote about Obamacare really have to do with the visit to the Pope if that isn’t something they actually discussed? Nothing. But that’s what you posted about.
Actually I was responding to a poster who claimed there was a lack of coverage of the papal meeting on MSNBC and other news outlets and I shared coverage I had just witnessed on MSNBC.

It’s not just the black dresses, but the long sleeves on the black dresses with the veils. It just looks to me like they’re going to funerals.

Pope Francis, Melania Trump and Ivanka Trump shown smiling? How can this be possible? I’m being sarcastic. Some of the comments I’ve seen on twitter etc. commenting on whether someone smiled or not, etc. are pretty curious. What is the source for these photos?

I feel a bit insulted personally with all the complaining about the veiling and clothing. My wife wears a black veil to Mass every week, she veiled when visiting a Marian shrine a couple weeks ago because she felt called to do it, and I am sure she would do the same for the Pope.

If someone wants to do it, awesome. They didn’t need to, but they did. I find it very reverent and respectful of them for doing it. I wouldn’t have thought differently if they didn’t, but I always feel if someone does, it is a sign of respect and should never be frowned upon.
👍👍👍

One don’t get to meet the Pope and when one does, it is an experience of a lifetime.

When one respects the occasion, one will do anything to project it.

It brings tears to my eyes to see the wife of a President of the US respecting the Pope, and like a little child asking the Holy Father to bless her rosary.:thankyou:

Priests dress in black…they’re not in mourning! It’s a sign of respect for the Pope.
I was referring to the article I posted earlier and the directives on how to dress when meeting the Pope. Also, priests wear black because they are supposed to be dead to the world. So it is mourning in a way.
