I’m thrilled to hear this!
Has this been done at any previous papal enthronment? It highlights to the people of God that Patriarchs and Major Archbishops are, like the Pope of Rome, heads of true Churches.

Just watch, some Latin Trad who doesn’t even known that the ECs exist will decry “liberal Pope Francis” for processing with “schismatic Orthodox” hierarchs.

I have another idea. Have all the cardinals process up and reverence ALL the patriarchs: Pope of Rome as well as the Eastern Patriarchs. 😛

It is interesting that both the Russian and the Greek patriarchs are expected to attend. That is unprecedented.

Tomorrow’s ceremony is NOT an enthronement of Pope Francis. It is the Pope’s inaugural Mass to start his Petrine Ministry as Bishop of Rome.

The Pope ascended the Chair of Peter upon his acceptance of his election as Bishop of Rome and, therefore, as Supreme Pontiff and Universal Pastor of the Catholic Church.

I don’t think the Russian Patriarch will attend the ceremony tomorrow. The MP is represented by Metropolitan Hilarion.

He was canonically Pope of Rome at the moment he accepted the election. The “inaugration mass” was previously the papal “coronation”, which is essentially an enthronment…a symbolic installation of Pope Francis as Bishop of Rome and Supreme Pastor of the Church Universal. When an Eastern patriarch is elected by his synod, he accepts the election, and at a later point is installed/enthroned.

Benedict processed with the Patriarchs to venerate St. Peter as well.

That’s awesome!

What I don’t get, is how Pope Francis, being beloved by Eastern Catholic and hailed by the Orthodox can be so anti-Latin Mass.

What are Eastern Catholic’s take on his treatment of the traditional Roman Liturgy?
Where have you read that he is anti-Latin Mass? I have only been able to surmise that he is not a promoter of the expansion of the Latin Mass, I haven’t read anything that would lead me to believe he is anti?? Please site a reference.

I have friends in Buenos Aires who attend the EF, in fact they are part of the Gregorian Choir for the Solemn Mass Each Sunday. When the Motu Proprio was promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI, the then Cardinal Archbishop, now Gloriously Reigning Pope Francis gave them a very nice parish church for the exclusive use of the EF. There are I think three or four more EF communities in the Archdiocese, and several more around Argentina. These are all under the local Ordinaries and not SSPX chapels or small independent chapels.

The fact that he also stopped and offered prayers at the altar which contains the relics of Pope St. Pius V and is dedicated to Pius is also promising to me. There are five other popes who are, entombed in the Basilica and one empty tomb where Honorius III was formerly entombed. If he was simply honoring those who preceeded him, he would have visited all the tombs, but per the reports and photos, he only visited the Icon of Maria Salus Populi. The altar at the chapel of the Crib (of our Lord) where St. Ignatus offered his first Mass, and the Altar of Pope St. Pius V. before greeting those who work at the Basilica, and going on with his day.

Awesome! Thanks Filioque!

Anyone have pics of the Catholic Patriarchs and Pope Francis yet?

What’s the basis of your statement?

His inaugural Mass tomorrow is in Latin, except that the Gospel will be proclaimed and chanted in Greek to show the universality of the Church!
Each reading was in a different language…

The prayers of the faithful were also polyglot.

Very positive recorded comments by Ukrainian Catholic Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk on new Pope Francis on Catholic News Service. For some reason I think they were taped before Russian Orthodox Metropolitan Hilarion’s uncalled for criticism of the Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Pope’s Jesuit order.
