According to Rorate Caeli, he seems rather apathetic towards the Extraordinary Form. I would be very much surprised if His Holiness continued with Benedict’s traditional “reform of the reform”.

There is no FSSP presence in Argentina at all and there appear to be no Extraordinary Form Masses in Argentina except for SSPX Chapels, of which there are quite a few, including one in the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires. The Holy Father has apparently never celebrated one, at least I could find no record of it, and reportedly does not allow it to be celebrated in his Diocese… After perusing the Buenos Aires Archdiocesan website, I could find no mention of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass being celebrated anywhere by anyone. While those facts are not really surprisingr, they are somewhat disheartening, especially after the Indult by Blessed Pope John Paul II and the generous application allowed by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

That being said, Pope Francis is my Pope and I do support him.

It doesn’t appear reform of the liturgy is at the top of his agenda, but I would be surprised if the Spanish Masses weren’t expanded.

The initial reports I have heard haven’t sounded encouraging, but I’ll wait a little bit to see what else comes to light. I have a feeling that he’s not going to do much with the liturgy one way or the other, but I guess we have to wait and see for that.

I have seen video of him in lovely vestments incensing the altar at a Mass. I did not see the rest of the Mass so can’t say which form it was, but I know enough to know that his Masses will be correct and reverent.

And regarding no EF’s in Argentina: I’ve heard from one person that Latin America is forty years behind in a lot of things. Perhaps Pope Francis can start the ball rolling in getting people back to reverent Masses. Who knows? It’s WAY too early to tell.

I agree. It is way too early (and not appropriate ever) to start being suspicious of and dissing our new Pope.

I am guessing that, due to the similarity in the languages, someone who is a native Spanish or Italian speaker does not see the Latin Mass as very different from the Mass in Spanish or Italian. Their perspective is going to be different than an English or German speaker.

I would agree that is probably not at the top of the agenda, nor should it be. Probably shouldn’t be in the top 10

I heard the same as well. From people who lived there. He did not approve of the Latin Mass in Buenos Aires
It saddens me a lot :bighanky:, but He is my Pope & I do support & pray for Him.

A dear friend of mine visited & lived in Latin America for 6 months & called the Archdiocese in his area asking about the Latin Mass & was told several times that
“Latin was dead, what for??? We do not need that, its for old people”

And he could not find Holy water or confessionals at 4 churches he visited
Every Church he visited was very modern, reminding him of Protestant Churches
from back home He is a convert…

I pray that Pope Francis can start the ball rolling indeed…

Well he’s been the Primate of Argentina and the Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires for the last 12 years, so…if it hasn’t been done yet, idk why it would happen now.

But, we live in hope!

God bless Pope Francis, guide him and keep him and protect the Holy Roman Church!

Let’s not forget: the vernacular Mass is the ordinary form of the Mass. “Extraordinary” means exactly what it says, out of the ordinary. Neither JP2 or B16 celebrated the Mass in Latin - the Mass is simply the Mass. It would be nice if he promoted it - but right now there are other issues, and the Holy Spirit gives us the Holy Father we need right now.

Folks, I’m going to say is let’s not be the like the initial reaction on Rorate Caeli: “Of all the unthinkable candidates, Jorge Mario Bergoglio is perhaps the worst.” He won me over as soon as he started the Our Father, and then asked the people for their blessing: truly, the Servant of the Servants of God.

If human minds and hearts fear that a man coming from such a place will only bring our Church to ruins, God has shown time and time again that the most glorious of saints come from the most unlikely of places.

St. Peter was the unlikeliest Apostle to become Pope. St. Francis of Assisi should not have become so holy.

Hope in God is our source of strength!

I can see the Latin Mass going away. Even now less than 6 years after Pope Benedict’s Moto Propio, in my Diocese of Metuchen, NJ, only the Shrine Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament offers Latin Mass.

People say that Vatican II didn’t eliminate the Tridentine Mass, They just fail to truthfully state that it was relegated to obscure places.
