Vatican City, Jun 27, 2016 / 01:20 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Pope Francis told journalists on Sunday that he was somewhat angered when reports emerged that the Church was allegedly paving the way for the ordination of women to the diaconate, since no such change is in the works.

“The first to be surprised by this news was me,” the Pope said June 26 during an in-flight press briefing en route to Rome following his three-day visit to Armenia.

“They said: ‘The Church opens the door to deaconesses.’ Really? I am a bit angry because this is not telling the truth of things.”

Good for him for putting the media in its place.

I am afraid that Pope Francis is a little naive about the modern media. As a member of a religious order, he has attempted to separate himself from the media, never watching television, for example. I doubt that he reads newspapers much, either. I would imagine that the media coverage of his pontificate is coming as a surprise to him, as they are pursuing their own agenda, very different from his.

That seems to me to be very accurate. I don’t think I’ve ever considered that particular angle before.

We live in a world where a minor celebrity can have his opinion on a hot button topic reach CNN’s website in mere minutes. Pope Francis is no ordinary celebrity - he likely has the most media coverage of any man on the planet except for the President of the United States - and even a simple musing or a “throwaway line” is a huge story. I wonder if he realizes that almost every mainstream media outlet (especially in the US) loves to use him and twist his words to get the most viewers, clicks, and listeners possible? Whether they construe his words in a positive or negative light, it doesn’t matter. Pope Francis is good for business and brings and audience every time. Heck, we’re talking about him right now!!!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone covered by the media like he is in my entire life. He’s quite the attention-getter.

I hope at some point he will recognize them for the enemies of the Church that they are. Jesus warned that the world would hate us.

I’m not sure this is such an inaccurate report though. Has Pope Francis not created a commission to investigate the possibility of ordaining female deacons? To say that is “paving the way” for doing so may be getting slightly ahead of the game but I would not say it was unfair or unreasonable based on the creation of the said commission.

Good point. 👍 Hopefully this will serve as a wake-up call for him to exercise prudence, especially when dealing with loaded questions (coughgayscoughIslamcoughSSPX :D)

This is why I would never want to be famous. I don’t have the media savvy. I think Pope Francis just says what he thinks, which is a sign of humility. Most of us are at liberty to do that without enormous repercussions.

Most of us are not leader’s of Churches, leaders of nations, and God’s emissary on Earth.

With great power comes greater responsibility.

Yes. Which is why I hope fame never happens to me! Though I don’t have to worry about being Pope, luckily.

Finally but it seems to be too little and way to late. He has dozens of little words of wisdom out there that needs to be clarified. I’m very disappointed in our pontiff and pray for him.

Peace!

I feel sympathy for him.

I recall the look of shock on this poor man’s face when he was appointed Pope.

He has a tough row to hoe.

I’m sorry, but I had to laugh a little bit when I read this. People have been complaining on this forum and elsewhere since Pope Francis was elected about how the media has been misconstruing many of his statements, and with very good reason most of the time. Over three years later, and the Pope is just figuring this out?

Unfortunately, I have to say that if the Pope is going to continue his freewheeling style of Papal plane interviews, and taking impromptu questions from audience members at various events, then things like this are going to continue to happen. It’s his prerogative to conduct interviews and interact with the media however he wishes. But he’s going to have to accept the consequences for doing things this way. This is not to absolve the media of their misleading journalism, but the Pope and/or his advisers could do some things to mitigate these misunderstandings.

This is very true. As someone who has openly admitted that he hasn’t watched TV since the early 1990s and doesn’t know how to use a computer, it is not a surprise that this has caught Pope Francis off guard. I admire the Pope’s resolve with regard to technology so I don’t think he can be blamed to much for how the media reports on him, but shouldn’t he have advisers helping with this kind of stuff? Or maybe he just ignores them. Who knows.

I think the Pope has a TV. Maybe he doesn’t watch FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS on Sunday mornings. He does like football. 🙂

World Cup 2014: Will Argentina win? Is the pope a Catholic?

The unprecedented cohabitation of two popes in the Vatican has been characterised by tact and mutual respect. But the question is whether the cordial relations between popes Francis and Benedict can really survive a World Cup final between Argentina and Germany, their respective countries of birth.

While no one is expecting an outbreak of chanting between the two papal camps, surely there might just be a little frisson of rivalry? “Popes are superior beings” was the sober reply from the Vatican’s spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi. “They always say the best [side] should win.”

Lombardi conceded that he expected Francis to “at least inform himself of the result”. Yet it seems more than likely that, come Sunday night, the Argentinian pope will be glued to the old-fashioned cathode ray TV that a recent visitor glimpsed in his modest quarters in the Vatican’s guesthouse, the Casa Santa Marta.

A card-carrying member of the Argentinian Primera División club, San Lorenzo de Almagro, the pope is described on the club’s website as an ardent fan. He granted one of his earliest private audiences – within a month of the start of his papacy – to the players and officials. And the club has published a letter to its chairman in which Francis reminisced about following the side as a boy through the “glorious” 1946 season when they won their third title. “What a goal from Pontoni!” he exclaimed.

Pope Francis v. Pope Benedict: Who Will God Favor In World Cup Final?

Early on in the games, Francis vowed that he would not pray for Argentina to win, and would instead remain neutral. But when Argentina played Switzerland in the early phase of the tournament, he was quoted joking with his Swiss Guards that “this is war.” Even the Vatican Communications office got in on the fun tweeting a cartoon of an angry Pope Francis watching the game from behind two cheering Swiss guards.

Sunday’s pope playoff is also going viral on Twitter with ample examples of how the two popes might be secretly praying against each other or how they might be trying to psych each other out as they watch.

This was the tweet from the Vatican Communications office.

Wait. He is mad about the women deaconess thing but the rest is legit!?

I found this odd with all the media spin on homosexuality, marriage, birth contro etc. it was the women deaconesses that ticked him off!?

I wondered about that too. I think he’s just got other fish to fry. Whenever I read some of the things he said as Bishop, I just think his goals as Pope are to not completely shut down communication avenues with the media. That may not be so far-fetched anymore given some of the recent court rulings here in America. Many people in power seem increasingly hostile to anything Catholic. And if anything, the journalists present when that question was asked hopefully have the wits to realize that his disgruntlement with this scenario might apply to others.

No he did not. He asked the CDF to inform him of any information on the topic
I think that I will ask the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith to inform me about the studies on this topic

Here is the transcript from the Pope’s actual statement

aleteia.org/2016/05/13/complete-transcript-of-pope-francis-remarks-on-women-deacons/

One other thing to keep in mind, he assigned this investigation to Cardinal Muller, who had already determined that, based off of the historical evidence, the Church did not ordain women deacons.

So, since there is no new historical evidence, the Pope could hardly be expecting a change in the decision of Cardinal Muller
