Pope Francis approves canonization of Cardinal John Henry Newman
Pope Francis Wednesday approved the canonization of Bl. John Henry Newman, a Roman Catholic cardinal, scholar, and founder of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in England.
Cardinal Newman, who is a much admired by Catholics, was a prominent figure in Nineteenth Century England. Already famous as a Church of England clergyman as an intellectual leader of that church, he became a Catholic, and later a Cardinal. His writings are still widely read and have an impact on Catholic thought. Non-Catholics as well see him as an important figure in English literature.
