Pope Francis calling priests to be like “Shepherds living with the smell of the sheep” - what an image! Pope Francis is telling them to really need to get out there and mix with the people. Only then will we have the renewal of the priesthood that we need so badly.

The LCWR has this aspect of the ministry right. They are popular and well liked, because they get out there in the community. They mix with the poor and sick. Most people aren’t aware or don’t care about “doctrinal irregularities” that might be in the presentations of some of the speakers at their leadership retreats. They just love them.

The past decade has been terrible. 😦 The teenagers in my parish have grown up with the message that they must be wary of priests. As children they were kept away from them. I wouldn’t be surprised if many can’t even name our Pastor. Trust in the hierarchy needs to be restored and good men need to be sent out to the front lines to reconnect with the people. There is no way we can rebuild the church unless that happens.
