Pope Francis received a delegation from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on June 28, the day before the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, and called upon Catholics and Orthodox to abandon “sentiments and attitudes of rivalry, mistrust, and rancor” and to undertake “every form of cooperation” in “concrete undertakings in service to suffering humanity.”

Nice. 🙂 Not that there’s anything new there, mind you (see the 1993 document “Uniatism, Method of Union of the Past, and the Present Search For Full Communion”) but sometimes things need to be restated.

Catholics and Orthodox should work together and cooperate in human service, yes, but I don’t see the Orthodox Church accepting the doctrines of papal infallibility and universal supremacy.

Likewise, I can’t see the Catholic Church dropping the doctrines of papal infallibility and universal supremacy.

If neither side budges, I don’t see any hope for restoration of full communion.
Because of historical, theological, and liturgical reasons, I think it highly unlikely that the Eastern Orthodox will agree to change their position and agree to reunion.
