When it comes to heterodox priests he seems to be far more tolerant and forgiving than with priests who defend doctrine and practice. He seems to regard them as Pharisees.
Clearly he’s talking about defying safety measures – it says so, right in the article. Risking other people’s lives is hardly “defending doctrine and practice.”
That quote is constantly being used out of context, when Pope Francis said nothing about persisting in sin, but rather judging the heart of the person.
In this case, he wasn’t talking about priests who were bravely defending the faith or standing for Christ—he was talking about those who defied health guidelines and bishops’ directives, thereby endangering others.
