Why do monks cultivate caffeine then? Are you suggesting that a monk becomes a pagan whenever he drinks coffee?
Are you suggesting that the sacraments, the ordinary means of grace, are supplemented by the drinking of coffee? Is one just as like to become sanctified by drinking coffee as by going to confession or by receiving communion?

Where in my posts did you ever get those crazy assertions???

Caffeine enhances human awareness, which can translate into a better communion with God, but in no way does that suggest it enhances God’s perfect gifts (I’m speaking about the gifts themselves). Caffeine can only increase our potential for better partaking of the sacraments (the effects of the sacraments on us human beings), but it NEVER changes the sacraments themselves.

ok, Robert. What you say goes against everything the Church has ever taught but ok.

Please do inform me how my view goes against Church teachings? Did the Church ever say that caffeine intake to increase one’s awareness is a violation of the sacraments?

Caffeine intake does not affect our intellect and our judgment negatively.

Are beer and wine considered to be recreational drugs in some sense? Alcohol can be a drug of sorts and people can use it for recreation.
They can be, but having a beer will not automatically get you drunk and affect your prudential judgement. Taking a hit of weed will get you stoned right off the bat.

Does that mean that pot does not have other positive qualities that may outweigh the slight negative qualities, such as reducing depression, anxiety, insomnia or increasing the sense of love, peace and an overall feeling of contentedness?

BTW, I think I have stopped smoking medical marijuana because I find that I now feel just fine without it.

I believe the Church teaches that the ends dont justify the means.

I would love it if this was Church doctrine, that anything that negatively affected our intellect or judgment was sinful. This would justify what I already suspected, that reality TV is a sin!

Really on both counts too. I feel 1 beer, I especially feel 1 glass of wine or liquor. If alcohol didn’t have an effect people generally wouldn’t drink it, despite the taste. Marijuana doen’t necesarrily hinder your ability to reason either. In fact it can make you more imaginitive. Most of my Abstract Algebra class agreed that it can actually help in understanding abstract concepts. Carl Sagan wrote a bit about the benefits assiciated with apprciating the arts and he was no slouch when it came to intelligence/reasoning abilities.

Alcohol KILLS thousands if not more people a day, and is 100% a more dangerous and ABUSED drug than marijuana could ever be. FACT!

A completely specious comparison. And I say this as the child of an alcoholic with a lot of alcoholics in my family as well as experience volunteering in an alcohol treatment program that focused on late stage clients. I am no fan of alcohol, its abuse or the impact on the individual, families and strangers who may be killed through drunk driving. That being said you are 100% wrong in your assertion above. Please cite your statistical support as well as documenting your powers of prophecy…I didn’t think so.

You are simply expressing your uninformed opinion. Further the use of alcohol far exceeds that of pot…thank heavens. So just comparing numbers is pointless.

Pot makes you stupid. It is addictive. It is a gateway drug. It is the most common drug named when entering treatment. It damages the brain, particularly of young people who never recover. Any medical benefits can be obtained through extraction of THC into capsule form. There is no reason to smoke pot. None…except you want to get stoned.

Unlike alcohol, there is little point in partaking unless you want your brain warped. Alcohol is used in a celebratory manner, as an accent to a meal, as a social activity (i.e. wine festivals, wine tastings, winery events). One can enjoy alcohol without turning into a drunk.

There is no good reason to ENCOURAGE pot use by making it legal. Ask people in Colorado, many of whom swallowed the baloney that it was a harmless drug and are now regretting it. Ask the family devastated by the father hallucinating on an edible form of pot who then shot his wife to death. Ask the parents of children rushed to the hospital for accidentally getting into daddy’s pot cookies. Ask the employers who cannot fill positions because a majority of applicants test positive.

This is a bad drug and anyone who tells you otherwise is either trying to protect his or her desire to get stoned or making money off the drug trade.

Robert Sock, you are a kind soul but read your own posts…it makes you FEEL closer to God. You should never rely on feelings Robert. If we relied on feelings there would be a lot more mayhem, violence, adultery, and assault in this world. Controlling our feelings is what is asked of us.

This is true. Now when they tell us that mind altering drugs should not be legalized, should that include alcohol? I read that a judge in Florida drove her car off the street and banged repeatedly into a wall because she was drunk. Isn’t alcohol a dangerous drug?

To the degree that marijuana promotes true experiences of LOVE, it should not be condemned by the pope or society. A tiny seed of love in a person, no matter its cause, can be cultivated by God to bring that person to a state of great holiness.
