In my opinion, there is no alliance between the U.S. and Russia, as it is being claimed the Pope said.

The two men were able to connect mentally. Trump and Putin both know from each other that they’re strong-willed and have tricks up their sleeves. Trump especially has shown to keep opponents off balance with his unpredictability. He can come out charging from a corner startling his opponents. Putin was a KGB agent and spy and his reputation of a seasoned politician is well recognized and he is also dangerous.

Would it have been better for these two leaders to have gotten off on the wrong foot?

So when it was Obama trying to improve relations with Russia that was ok?

Again, since when has this country been in alliance with Russia?

What exactly about the United States and Russia does Pope Francis find displeasing any more than other western countries?

Maybe he’d rather the U.S. and Russia start World War III with each other then…

Politics and perhaps a little bit of the “you should be better” attitude that the good kids often get from their parents.

Of course maybe it’s something else, I’ll leave it to others to figure out what.

Perhaps he recognizes that Russia is not a state in which its citizens enjoy great political freedoms and governed by a semi-dictator and fears the USA is showing signs of wavering on its committments to human rights and political freedoms.

I can’t answer for the Holy Father but the US is the world’s only empire. It claims a right to initiate war on any country in the world that doesn’t bend to its will or do as it demands. It claims the right to sit in judgment of all other world governments and overthrow them at its pleasure. At least for the US it is unique in the world with its imperium, both claimed and actually exercised.

Russia stands alone in the west in opposing the US. I’m not sure what about Russia is so bad in his mind.

I’m not sure I trust the source in the OP… but, I could see the Pope being concerned, as I am and many others, by Trump and Putin’s meeting. First we had the proposal of a joint cyber security initiative. Trump had to quickly backpedal on that one… Then we had Trump endorsing Putin’s denials of Russian interference in the US election. The message? The US Intelligence Community can’t be trusted…but President Putin can. That’s worrying.

Very true.

The US is far from an empire. The days of Empires are long gone.

If she truly used her military might to crush those who opposed her will - China would cease to exist. But China continues to exist because the United States is but one Country (powerful as she may be) along with many other Countries who want to promote the way they best believe to find peace.

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and be concerned you’ve been reading some suspect material.

No, it’s an empire. Look at a map of all of her military outposts. Take a look at a list of military attacks which occur the world over. It is of course the modern type of empire with appeals to democracy used to justify her actions. After the US came out as the main victor of WWII and they changed the War Department to the Department of Defense was the day the US achieved being the empire. Empires no don’t need to make war so much as defend what they control.

The maps are somewhat deceiving. Empires don’t have 50% of it’s air capability grounded by budget restraints. The last Admin (with Ted Cruz’ help in the Gov shutdown) gravely harmed the US military. The US is in a State of re-building. Sure, we are ahead of nearly all Nations - but still no where near where we demand the military to be.

The US spends on its military an amount equal to the next seven or eight countries combined. Empires do have their capacity grounded because they go broke.

Historically speaking, The Roman Empire, Persian Empire or the Mongol Empire all had more global influence and fear on the planet than the United States of America. Yes, the US made a HUGE mark on global communication but we are just a powerful military - and not much more than that, historically speaking.

I couldn’t disagree more. Besides the US’s military presence around the world, the US also dominates financially and culturally.

The US has great influence yet the Roman Empire was financially and culturally more dominant.
