I love this Pope. He defies categorization. He is intellectually demanding (for me anyway:o). One must really think and reflect when reading his talks, rather than make assumptions that he is of this or that political stripe.

Deo Gratias, it supports what I’ve been telling people at the EF Mass, I assist at.

I thought he would defend the Latin mass

Deo Gratias for Pope Francis and his defense of the Traditional Latin Mass/Extraordinary Form of the Mass.

I wonder how many other Bishops wil oppose him on this area, since this group apparently felt that the Extraordinary Form of the Mass was the biggest problem that they had in their area. More than a few other Bishops worldwide feel the same way, ie: claiming the Extraordinary Form causes disunity and discord in the Body of Christ.

According to reports, Pope Francis has rejected some Italian Bishops who sought to remove the Latin Mass, and said to “treasure tradition”.

I put this thread here because it isn’t from a news article.
Deo Gratias 👍 😃 👍 😃

I don’t know too much about it, but from what I’ve read, the Italian Bishops are generally not for the traditional mass, and this area of Italy in particular is quite against the trad mass. So apparently, this was a likely meeting for this topic to come up. I know that some other Bishops elsewhere are also against the trad mass, but I think this particular group is unusually strong against it, so I don’t think the resistence will be as strong in other areas, at least I hope not 🙂

Oh for the day when that is our biggest “problem”! :gopray2:

Yeah, that’s it: it’s all the EF’s fault.

I can certainly point you to some areas in the United States where it is just as strong, if not stronger, and has been so for years.

Thankfully, not all Bishops, even Italian ones, are as hostile to tradition as the Bishops who asked for SP to be overturned.

churris.com/summorum-pontificum-reforming-the-reform-and-resisting-the-reform

This audio files in interesting in many ways. It documents the restoration of the TLM to where it is now, being regarded as the EF of the Roman Rite. According to Fr. Goodwin’s account, Pope John Paul II was ready to issue something very similar to Summorum Pontificum, but Archbishop Lefebvre advised him against acting without going through the Curia. youtube.com/watch?v=IjGwtsSK0jA

I cannot help but wonder where the Church would be at today in the “reform of the reform” had the ancient Mass been restored in the 1980’s in the same way that it was in 2007. Regardless, great strides have been made, and I hope they continue.

Regarding the original article links, while I am delighted that His Holiness shut them down in the manner that he did, I am also very disturbed that they asked in the first place. It suggests a level of dissent from what the previous two Popes taught in relation to the EF of the Mass that is very high indeed. I have not looked, but I would be shocked to find that they had in anyway been obedient to Pope John Paul II’s call for Bishops to be generous in the provision of the TLM to their flock. In addition, for them to ask Pope Francis to remove Msgr. Marini as the Master of Papal ceremonies is also telling to me.

I hope that the Abbot is correct, but it is far too early to answer this right now. When Msgr. G. Marini’s term as Master of Papal Ceremonies is up, it will be telling whether or not he keeps him on for another term, or replaces him with someone more like his predecessor. Even if Marini is replaced, it could be so that that he can be elevated to Bishop, in which case His Holiness Pope Francis would still have the option of bringing in someone like Marini, or someone more attuned to the style in which he celebrated Mass in Argentina. That decision will let us know whether or not he is really in continuity with Pope Benedict XVI, or not. In addition, the mention of an amalgam of B16 and JP2 was interesting. The question to my mind is, was the good Abbot referring to early Pope John Paul II, or later JP2 when things settled down a bit liturgically? Hard to say without further information.

Interesting comparisons regardless.

Some clarification is in order here. The 1962 liturgical books are the issue here, not just any Mass in Latin or the old Mass in vernacular. We went through a rough period in the 60’s and 70’s when the distinction between the two forms was not so clear and the OF and EF were not said side-by-side as they are allowed to today.
