I have friends who lean more than a little bit toward the progressive thinking. They have been very happy with Pope Francis. They are of the opinion that he is going to lead the Church toward women priests, same-sex marriage and birth control. I have other friends who are not progressive to that degree but are rejoicing because they think that the EF form of the Mass is going to be repressed and the Mass will be opened up for a free for all again. I predict that they are going to be bitterly disappointed.
Now for my other friends who want to see the end the OF Mass, they are afraid that the progressives are right. I can’t see that as being the case, however, I don’t think Pope Francis is going to be a stickler for details. He will be far more concerned about whether or not the poor and lonely are welcomed rather than making sure that they sit, knee and pray with proper form. From what I can ascertain, Pope Francis is going to want simple, devout Masses.
I do think that for the vast majority of Catholics, who may sort of lean one way or the other, will find out that he is going to be the voice for the very best that is in all of us.
