The burning question, then, is: is it in Jesusâ ab aeterno plan for his priests to enjoy a comfortable and peaceful retirement? Jesus had it rough, was crucified, why should the servants expect to be treated any better than the Lord? âHe has taken a vow of poverty, lives in the lap of luxury in a 6million $ flat in the Dakota Building in New York, but, see, he doesnât actually own the place, so itâs all legitâ. Not. Boy do we live in confusing times. The Church is losing credibility from so many fronts, itâs frightening. Iâm sure it comes from a good place, corki, but denying problems has never solved anything. I want edification from Catholic clerics, actually, I demand edification from my Catholic clerics. Let some of the light from Heaven shine through. Impresss with your godliness, selflesness, unheard-of charity etc. Being carnal and materialistic impress no one. Go with the flow, swim with the current, and, bingo, you are both of these things.

I thought vows of poverty, obedience and chastity were pârt of anyoneâs ordination. So if you,re not part of an order with such a vow, you can ,theoretically, become a billionaire if youâre a shrewd investor and you came from a very wealthy family? However you slice it, this wonât be received favourably in the secular world. People will look at the God incarnate, look at a wealthy Cardinal or Bishop, and shake their heads in sheer bewilderment. With all the different bits and pieces I gather, I cannot put together a logical and coherent puzzle. Jesus is well pleased with his Priests living in a castle with a killer view of Lake Como? Jesus was equally pleased with Aquinas, although he must have been a pretty serious overeater as he apparently weighed around 300 pounds?
No. Only religious priests make those vows. Secular priests make promises of obience to their bishop and of chastity. Not poverty.

From memory, I believe Pope Francis called for the state to redistribute. How does the state do that? By force.

Vows of poverty are part of the ordination of **some **religious orders. They are not part of the ordination of secular priests and bishops. Secular clergy are allowed to own private property. Some are relatively wealthy but those are usually the beneficiaries of an inheritance from a family member. I have never heard of any who are billionaires but there is nothing that would prohibit it as long as the money came from a legitimate source such as an inheritance.
Should our lives, rather, should the people who have heeded Godâs call to serve him live a life of luxury and ease at any point during that life, or does the âpoor banished children of Adam in this hopeless valley of tearsâ (paraphrasing) no longer apply? Jesus had it pretty rough, no pillow to lay his head upon, persecution left and right, ended up dying a cruel death next to two criminals, I wonder why his servants can live the life of a king, in stark contrast to their masterâs life? You can speculate all you want about whether Jesus is pleased but I can too. I think Jesus is very displeased that His children want to punish their retired and elderly clergy rather than giving them comfort and freedom of care in grateful recognition of their many decades of service to His Church.
To be fair, we know basically nothing outside of His ministry. We have no idea of what His life or the life style he lived other than his minisrty.
More than likely it was not lavish. God lowered Himself and became man, chose to be born in a manger out of humility. Washed the feet of the apostles out of humility. Chose to be baptized when He had no need to out of humility. Accepted a painful, tortous, and humiliating death out of humility. I think its pretfy safe to say Jesusâ residence was meager and less than comfortable.
