On the news site of the German Bishops’ Conference an author suggests Pope Francis is stopping the granting of ecclesiastical honorific titles, such as Monsignor. Here’s the story: katholisch.de/de/katholisch/themen/kirche_2/130913_monsignore_ade.php
He says that since Pope Francis took office, he has neither granted any titles, nor have any new cases for granting one been opened. The Pope is said to have stopped all those.
He also mentions, though, that all of this may be due to the group of eight Cardinals meeting soon to discuss the reform of the Curia, and Francis waiting for the results to not rush into possibly obstructive decisions.
I hope the latter is true, since I think that would really go a bit far. To me, honorific titles are not some nice decor to exalt some person, but actually have a function.
Has anyone got more information on this, or would someone like to offer their thoughts?
