“**I truly love the Catholic faith and the way of life it proposes and so it is a joy to join the body that is charged with safeguarding and clarifying these things,’’ Archbishop Fisher said.

“I am honoured and humbled that Pope Francis has chosen me to assist him in this new way.

“My work in moral theology, especially in bioethics, and many years as a member of the Australian Bishops Commission for Doctrine and Morals, will have been good preparation.’’

Archbishop Fisher, a member of the Dominican order, said his new responsibilities would also be a “good fit’’ because Dominicans had been involved with the congregation for centuries**.

This is exciting and excellent news. Aussies rule. The Dominicans and the Jesuits are perfect complementary partners in a Vatican ‘marriage’ also. :heaven::heaven::heaven:

I’ve posted the article in it’s entirety below. (Source: The Australian)

**"Pope Francis has appointed Sydney’s Catholic Archbishop, Anthony Fisher, 55, to the Vatican’s oldest and most influential congregation.

Archbishop Fisher, 55, will serve on the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

The congregation is the church’s final intellectual and moral arbiter in questions of faith and morals, the body that draws the line between what is acceptable writing/teaching/behaviour within the church and what is not acceptable.

It was founded by Pope Paul III in 1542 as the Congregation of the Holy Office of the Inquisition to “spread sound Catholic doctrine and defend those points of Christian tradition which seem in danger because of new and unacceptable doctrines”.

Almost a century later, it abandoned execution for heretics in 1640.

The word “Inquisition’’ was dropped from the name in 1904 when it was renamed the Holy Office in 1904 by Pope Pius X. It was rebadged in 1965 as the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger served as its prefect from 1981 to 2005, before being elected as Pope Benedict XVI.

Its current prefect, German Cardinal Gerhard Muller, was appointed in 2012. The congregation comprises an advisory board including cardinals, bishops, priests, lay theologians and canon lawyers.

Its members are selected for their intellectual and theological stature.

The first Australian appointed to the body was George Pell, when he was an auxiliary bishop of Melbourne in 1990.

“I truly love the Catholic faith and the way of life it proposes and so it is a joy to join the body that is charged with safeguarding and clarifying these things,’’ Archbishop Fisher said.
