Ari Emanuel might soon get a chance to hug it out with the pope.

Sources say the William Morris Endeavor superagent and his co-CEO Patrick Whitesell are on a shortlist of media players whom reps for Pope Francis have approached for a special meeting at the Vatican this fall.

The pontiff apparently is interested in discussing how the church is perceived by Western media influencers and ways to improve its portrayal in entertainment. The Vatican, which is said to be working with the nonprofit Varkey Foundation, came up with a list of Hollywood players to invite to a summit of sorts. Film and television producer Brian Grazer, OWN mogul Oprah Winfrey, actor Matt Damon and semiretired supermogul David Geffen also scored invites, according to sources.

WME declined to comment on whether Emanuel, the brother of Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel and the inspiration for Entourage’s Ari Gold, would accept the invitation to break bread with the Catholic Church leader.

I wonder if Bill Maher is on the list?

Let’s see what comes out of this! Oprah at the Vatican? :hmmm:

If she goes, I think she will take whatever she likes from the visit, and leave what doesn’t appeal to her. Spiritual, but not religious. A little of this, a little of that. All the positive, and none of the negative. But I could be wrong. Maybe there will be a great conversion!

There would have to be humility first!

Its weird that the Pope is involved in a discussion on western media or even media in general. Its weird that hes inviting Oprah, a talk show host. Its weird because Pope Francis made the claim that he hasnt watched tv since 1990, so how is it that hes up to date on how the Church is portrayed in western media?

I need to start reading People Magazine. The only name I knew is Oprah.

Do you think Oprah will go?

If Bill Maher was invited and he went, that would really be the day.

Another move by the Pope which upsets conservative Americans.

It must be getting tired continually making excuses for the Pope or just saying that the persona of the Pope is being warped by the media.

I’m thankful I don’t have this weight on my shoulders.

Exactly. Its a wasted effort anyway, as Pope Francis has clarified long ago that the media isnt distorting what he says. He says these are his ideas, not the media’s.

Ask yourself this question: Why is the pontiff “apparently interested in discussing how the church is perceived by Western media influencers and (in) ways to improve its portrayal in entertainment”?

Is this part of the pope’s job description? Why is he “apparently” wasting his time on such nonsense. You’d think that there were weightier concerns for the universal Church than how it is perceived by “Western media influencers” (“influencers” – is that even a word? Who wrote this doggerel?). Is it the Church’s business to improve its “portrayal in entertainment”?

Wouldn’t his time be better spent working on how the Vatican can improve its ability to evangelize the world with the eternal Truth of Christ and His Church? Time is running short. Why are we wasting our time talking to influencers of entertainment regarding its (rather than our) portrayal of the Church?

Seriously I think this is someone else’s idea that the Pope possibly went along with. I don’t think the Pope was in bed one night and decided it would be a good idea to talk with western media about the portrayal of the Church. That is my theory.

…and he went along with it? Seriously? What’s with the pope? Is he his own man? Sounds to me like there are “influencers” at the Vatican as well. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

That makes a lot of sense actually. Considering the Pope hasnt watched television since 1990, he’s most likely taking the word of those that do watch television and rolling with it.

With that said, it doesnt sound like that good of an idea to speak out on something one has not personally witnessed or with which one has no experience.

We can only speculate. . .but that is what I am assuming.

It could be that he simply doesn’t see Oprah as an enemy, and maybe even admires some of the work she has done.

And Oprah has done some good things.

The media and the internet must be evangelized. Thus, its leaders must be met. Simple.

I disagree. The media is very important and it plays a huge role in how young people especially see the world. A media that is hostile to the Church makes the job of evangelizing harder. Especially when the media is the only point of reference some people have of Catholics, then their influence is powerful. Changing how the Church is seen in the media is addressing the Churches ability to evangelise.

Honestly, in the Australian media, the Catholic Church is only portrayed negatively. There is no mention of the good that the Church does. Only the “harm”. The public has bought it. That makes evangelizing difficult because every one is so convinced they already know what the Church is so they’re not even willing to have a conversation about what the Church really thinks and teaches. Or to even hear about the good we do in opposition to the so called harm.

Do I want the media to evangelize for us? no. We don’t need the media to do our work. I’m not suggesting that. They aren’t equipped for that and it’s not their job. If we can get the message portrayed in the media from automatically negative to neutral (or even absent entirely) that would open doors for conversation. I’m not prepared to give up our truths to get a good portrayal. Our truths are non-negotiable. If we can help with the media portrayal without doing that, it can only be a good thing.

I’m not saying it would change everything. I believe the biggest issue we have is Catholics not knowing their faith. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try and minimise the harm the media does.

Will this meeting do that? I don’t know. It sounds strange to me but I suppose the first step in fixing a problem is actually identifying the causes. I can see how such a meeting might help, if they get the people involved right. Is that the people mentioned? Like a previous poster, I don’t recognise most of the names so I am not in a position to make a judgement on that.
