Pope Francis: It is 'better to be an atheist than hypocritical Catholic'

How has he done that? In most cases including this one, it has been misreported and twisted especially by non-Vatican media. Changing the whole meaning by excluding the most important part. He didn’t say what is being reported.

Those who accuse and then are now found to be wrong better think of an explanation for their willingness to believe the worst without investigating the truth. Not for us but for when Christ asks them why they were willing to believe the worst about his Vicar. :tsktsk:

My Priest has said “When you accuse the Pope you better be 100% sure without a doubt that you are right, especially if you are a Catholic.”
I’m pretty sure he said liberation theology was a good thing for Latin America in a recent interview. I also had a friendly argument with a priest at my Parish, a self described liberation theology advocate, who seems to think Pope Francis supports the movement.

I would be pleased to find out that he doesn’t support it. I think there are very good reasons why previous Popes have rejected it.

I won’t touch the Liberation Theology issue because I really don’t know much about it. This episode DOES remind me of when Pope Francis came to the US and visited St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC. I actually watched the Mass on EWTN and know that he preached a homily about how, by wordly standards, Jesus was a failure. But he went on to explain why he was NOT by holy standards.

So of course some media outlets trumpeted “Pope Francis calls Jesus a Failure” and even back then, when I think Pope Francis was not quite as controversial as post-AL, some Catholics were eager to believe the worst of him. 😦

I agree with our Pope, but hypocritical is probably not the best way to describe it. Everyone is a sinner including Catholics and atheists, but Catholics hold themselves to high standards. To those who have high standards, much more is expected. When a Catholic commits a sin and an atheist commits the same sin, the Catholic is going to be more culpable because they should know better. It’s always depends on the particular people being compared though. Many atheists have been exposed to the faith yet never once have looked into it to see if there is any truth to Christianity. They could be equally held accountable for their sins by falsely claiming ignorance.

I personally feel like the Pope has a little bit of a blind spot (re self-analysis) or a LOT of moxie. He spends a lot of time in a black pot insulting neighboring black kettles (and white and grey ones too). Sometimes I wonder if he is kind of daring his victims to point this irony out - kind of a taunt. But I always go back to blind spot as the more likely explanation.

The pope isn’t a hypocritical Catholic. Why would you say that?

How can you possibly think he’s *hypocritical?

.
He’s a sinner, same as you and me.

I don’t think anyone’s made the accusation that the pope, per se, is a hypocritical Catholic, esp in his public life.

But if he preaches one thing, and then believes it’s ok for him to do contrary to what he’s preached, that makes him a hypocrite.

And, given our knowledge of human nature, it’s pretty likely he’s done this.

Just like you have.

Just like I have.

Some people are having a hard time yanking the plank out of their eye.
