Pope Francis met with Metropolitan Hilarion just days after the Russian Orthodox Patriarchate of Moscow cut ties with the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, claiming his recognition of an independent Orthodox Church in Ukraine departed from Orthodox Christian norms.

Yes, but Metropolitan Hilarion is the chairman of the Department of External Church Relations and he was sent to Rome by Patriarch Kirill. He is the author of more than 600 publications.
