Pope Francis Never Wears the Papal Choir Dress

So, in this picture, someone who does not know the rankings, would seem that the Melkite Patriarch is the real primate there!
The Church is like a reversed pyramid. The One at the top is at the bottom, our Lord, Jesus Christ, First Bishop of His Church. So a plain dressed Bishop is never less a Bishop just fot being plainly dressed. The Apostles are usually clad is simple ways in icons as is St John the Baptist, and they are the top of our spiritual hierarchy after Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary.
Now that I see you all commenting to much the Pope’s fashion I undertand why Pope Francis decided to challenge it all the way through. I do not think that a Bishop meekness in serving us all is expressed in the fact that we can dress him up as a puppet. Or that tradition can dress him up. The service is more than the spectacle for our eyes… Tradition is alive in spirit not in the letter of a simple rule, in Christianity.

It is a minority of Catholics who even pay attention to the dress of the Pope.

People care about his actions.

Pope wears something fancy? People complain.

Pope wears something simple? People complain.

Changing a well established tradition is an action. Pope’s clothes covers about 90% of him in an extremely visual world. It is important and relevant.

I smell some modernism here… hope I’m wrong.
“Modernism” is a defined heresy. You seem to be implying the Pope is a heretic because he chooses not to wear certain articles of clothing his predecessors wore. “Hope I’m wrong.”

No!!! I am talking about the comment I answered when it said that tradition is alive in spirit not in the letter of the rule. I was not talking about the pope, but of I specific line of some member here and just saying it remembers modernism.

Please, correct your statement because it is kind of grave. I was not talking about the pope.

Congratulations. Now we have a thread about what both women AND the Pope should wear. :man_facepalming:t2:🤣

If you don’t like the topic just don’t comment here. People can discuss this subject, not just what you find important.

The bigger issue is the Pope wearing white shoes after September 1. Talk about a fashion faux pas!

Perhaps you need to remember this is a public forum and everyone that is a member can post on a thread, even if the OP doesn’t like what others have to say.
Does it make sense when everyone piles on saying “we already have too many threads about this”?
Does it hurt you in some way for there to be a thread where you don’t care for the topic, or that you think is discussed too much?

It hurts that some people consistently ignore Church teaching (or lack thereof) and continue to regard women’s clothing as something they are religiously-mandated to be policing, when the Catechism says nothing of the sort.

You don’t seriously expect people to be quiet when you propagate patently false ideas such as “it is required for Catholic women to dress in Style X or Y” or “Catholic women should dress in this way or else they’re bad Catholics?”, do you?

I think you have me mixed up with someone else.

No, I don’t.

I’m telling you why people continue to frequent threads that have already been discussed dozens of times previously and about which they complain…if they don’t, visiting non-Catholics may walk away with incorrect ideas about the Catholic Church and faith, such as the idea that women are required to dress in a certain way by Church teaching.

I get your point, I just think sometimes it gets too much simple and it is not good for the office the Pope represents. Look at the image below of the Pope with the Melkite Patriarch. While the Pope is wearing a plain green chasuble that looks like rather dull, the Melkite Patriarch is wearing a wonderful rich and elegant attire, really appropriate for his position. So, in this picture, someone who does not know the rankings, would seem that the Melkite Patriarch is the real primate there!
There is nothing wrong with the Holy Father’s chasuble in that picture, particularly since the Mass was held in Casa Santa Marta. I do not think the Pope is the least bit concerned that he will be discounted because his clothing doesn’t seem ornate enough. Instead, we have a picture of two ways of looking at this question placed side-by-side, with the prelate of the higher rank choosing the more simple (yet hardly dull!) vestments.

He took Francis as his regnal name. That ought to have been a hint about where St. Francis’ emphasis on the benefits of simplicity were going to come in. While it is entirely appropriate to use beautiful and costly furnishings for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, in imitation of the costly alabaster jar and its expensive contents entirely spent on Our Lord’s feet to anoint them in preparation for His Passion, it is also appropriate to select fine items with more of a noble simplicity.

I understand that the Holy Father papacy is all about a church of the poor and white cassock and basic black shoes fit this rather than the prada shoes worn by emeritus benidict.

Well, it is very clear what women should preferentially wear: dresses or skirts going below the knees loose fit very modestly. No question here if you are a Catholic.

In his defense, Pope Benedict’s red shoes were NOT made by Prada (not that I would have had a problem with that shoe manufacturer donating shoes to the Pope). They were made by cobblers who made shoes for John Paul II, as well. He mostly revived the use of vestments that the Vatican owns. There is no reason for them to become museum pieces. They are appropriate for the occasions for which the Pope elected to wear them.

Think about how these vestments would be seen if Pope Francis wore them:

I think it is easy to make too much of these things.

Maybe for this thread we can stick to criticizing the clothing selections of the Pope and other men. (Maybe even those who don’t belong to the clergy, since women and the clergy get so much of the attention.)

Sorry I wasn’t criticising emeritus benidict. I was just saying that the difference is personal approach. The vestments worn in the pics are beautiful thanks for posting.

God bless
