Sorry I wasn’t criticising emeritus benidict. I was just saying that the difference is personal approach.
I agree. With 13 million Catholics, we ought to rejoice in the variety of expression in the Church. This diversity that exists even within the boundaries of propriety is among our riches!!

As for rich vestments and other furnishings for churches, I count them as among that fine art meant for edification or enrichment of all, from the richest to the poorest. It is certainly among the best places for the artisans capable of such fine work to dedicate themselves. What can be too beautiful for God?

Totally agree Petra.

I truly believe that when Father wears fine vestments to say mass it glorifies our lord and there is nothing nicer than entering a beautiful church to worship

God bless

He has made clear many times that he wishes to live simply from preparing his own lunch at times, to refusing to move into the elaborate papal residence in favor of a simple apartment. I respect his choice but my preference is the more regal vestments for all men in the priesthood on the altar and when otherwise appropriate, not to exalt the man but to make the mass, our praise to God, special, much as we bring out the best we have for our guests.

Even if it were required, the Holy Father is the Supreme Liturgist and could either change the rubric or grant a one-time exception for himself. Most of the time, those granting themselves dispensations to the rubrics don’t have the authority to do it. When the Pope does it, though, he actually has the authority.

I think he likes taking meals and living near other people, too. A more introverted man might prefer the papal apartments, and if a future Pope does that it will make it easier for everyone else at the Vatican to give him that. The President living in the White House makes it easier for the Secret Service, after all, than if he lived elsewhere and commuted. This is the kind of thing that comes up when the housing in question is for a head of state.

What a wonder if one of them just makes a choice and nobody makes a big deal of it one way or the other.

To say that women are wearing “men’s clothing” when they wear pants is as preposterous as saying that prelates or clergy are wearing “women’s clothing” when they wear cassocks or men who wear kilts are in dresses. There are garments made without separate covering for each leg that are still unequivocally men’s clothing and there are garments that cover each leg separately that are unequivocally women’s clothing. Please.

Let’s not confuse what a Cardinal says, which is his opinion, with what the Church says.

No, not everything that cardinals (or even a Pope) says or writes makes those into “official church document and positions.”

What the Pope does or wears when he presides at a liturgy, in contrast, is allowable by virtue of the Pope’s authority to grant exceptions to the rubrics, including granting exceptions to himself.

True. I think it’s a point of interest, not so much a big controversy. And I believe his intention in part is to set an example, so perhaps he wishes for us to take notice and consider whether simplicity might be a better choice?

Actually that was an urban myth. Benedict wore shoes made by a German cobbler with a small business
