“When we see a mistake, a defect, a slip of a brother or sister, usually the first thing we do is go and tell others about it, to gossip. And gossip closes the heart of the community, disrupts the unity of the Church,” Pope Francis said in his Angelus address Sept. 6.

It’s a big challenge for Catholic forums especially. Gossip is so intoxicating.

When I first read this, I thought it was a joke. Gossip is more dangerous than covid-19?
Then I read the article, and I think I understand. He is asking the church not to talk about him behind his back. Fair enough, but is this really the biggest challenge facing the world today?

I never saw any appeal in gossip. Even from a young age I understood that other people’s business was not my business, and that blabbing about other people was inherently wrong. It just never needed to be explained to me. There is nothing complicated about knowing that if you don’t want somebody doing X to you, then don’t do X to other people.

I don’t mind taking about other people in general, but blabbing about something specific that is non of my business is not my thing. It’s just not very interesting either.
