His appointment comes three years after he was removed as prefect
Pope Francis has reappointed Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke to the Apostolic Signatura, nearly three years after removing him as prefect.

The Holy See announced Saturday morning that the American cardinal had been appointed to the Vatican’s highest court along with Cardinal Agostino Vallini, Cardinal Edoardo Menichelli, Archbishop Frans Daneels and Bishop Johannes Willibrordus Maria Hendriks.

Perhaps we will get less Francis bashing this way?

…oh wait, it’s CAF, that’ll never happen.

Burke was once Prefect. Now he is in a quite minor, advisory role. This is a not at all surprising political move.

Agreed. Considering that Cardinal Burke led this court until his removal by Pope Francis in 2014, this is of minor significance, even a slight if you are a sympathizer of Cardinal Burke’s. I wouldn’t speculate too much on why it happened, beyond throwing a bone to the conservatives - small one at that, a possible bow to pressure, but who knows. I don’t think anything that comes from the Vatican is straightforward these days, on purpose. Which is not to say I think there is necessarily a cohesive plan or vision behind the ambiguity.

Its a good thing.
C. Burke has great expertise in this area and its a shame it wasn’t being put to any use at all. Now he can start exerting influence again and hopefully bring balance to the AS.

The real question is if he would be restored to the Congregation or committee or whatever that screens and recommends bishop appointments. His returning to that committee would send a really significant message. That office, nicknamed “the Hat Shop”, has, arguably, as much influence as all the other offices in the Vatican combined.

As Pope Francis said earlier this year, Cardinal Burke is “an excellent lawyer.” I don’t think there is anyone more suited to be a “member” at the Signatura.

After all of the drama with the Knights of Malta, the Holy Father appointed a special apostolic Delegate to provide for the spiritual care / development of the Knights. +Burke remains Cardinal Patron, but what is his actual role if another archbishop is +Francis’ “Delegate”? Seems to me that His Eminence would thus have additional time on his hands… makes sense to give him some other additional responsibilities.

Cardinal Burke retains his title as Patron of the Knights of Malta but now he has no actual responsibilities in connection with it. So he probably didn’t have much to do in the way of official Vatican responsibilities before this appointment.

He was immediately assigned to a difficult case in Guam ? ,I believe…where his experience was needed. I do not remember the specifics but it was something serious, difficult,an abuse allegation, and somebody in the hierarchy involved and claiming innocence. He was there to be authority in a Tribunal. Not for anyone unexperienced…And there he went.

That was separate. I believe that was a special mission on behalf of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which has competence for clergy accused of child abuse.

Then I didn t get what was being said since you say “separate”, sorry…
I meant to say he had been busy in a difficult assignment related to his expertise.
