While flying back from his recent visit to the Philippines, Pope Francis announced he may cross the border between the U.S. and Mexico as a show of solidarity with Latino immigrants. Though the pontiff has not made plans to visit Mexico, he will be in the U.S. later this year.

Pope Francis announced some of his future trips and also commented on the possibility, in the future, of crossing the U.S.-Mexico border during his upcoming trip to the U.S., reports EFE. This doesn't sound like a good idea.

What a great witness this would make!

wonder how folks around CAF will respond to such a clear message of solidarity with the immigrant.

It may well just be some passing thought. The legalities, security, etc would require alot of pre-planning.

It’s more than an immigration issue.
So true. I don’t think Pope Francis will be looking for an EBT card, free medical care, college tuition cheaper than that available to taxpayers, and a driver’s license despite being unable to read English.

Plus voting for our next president.

As it is, Hispanics comprise about 40% of the Catholic population in the U.S. They predict within a decade they will form a majority of Catholics, and this despite many of them turning over to Protestantism. I’m sure the Pope will do all he can to prevent the latter from happening.

For those who feel that the US shouldn’t be the World’s police officer (foreign affairs), then it also stands to reason that they aren’t required to be the world’s sole charity provider as well. What I am saying is that the US isn’t required to accept EVERY disadvantaged man, woman and child seeking entry to the US and it isn’t wrong to place a limit on how many can enter the US legally and to enforce the border.

Traveling through dangerous terrains, dealing with human traffickers and other criminal elements.

I wonder how people on CAF would like to deal with such matters?

If he was in Mexico, wouldn’t it be more useful to talk to Mexico about their horrible human rights violating treatment of illegal immigrants coming into their country? Or that they treat all immigrants as second class citizens?

Or their violence problem, crime, government corruption, poverty, poor treatment of the church throughout history, etc.?

I mean, there’s a reason people are fleeing to the US from there. Mexico, by numbers and resources, really has no business being a third world country and yet there they are. It’s funny that the Church doesn’t seem to be standing up to them.

No they’re not. But it seems the people in the US would be more willing to accept them if they weren’t trying to set cultural and language standards. However, that’s going to happen anyway, as I see it. Parishes are going bilingual and I believe the Vatican is insisting priests learn Spanish among other things.

I figure at some point we’re all going go like some parts of Europe, with massive accomodations for languages.

Which is one of the reasons I’m learning Gaelic. For the inevitable day when I can look at a government employee and accuse them of discriminating against me for not having things available in a language less than 150k people natively speak.

Definitely a sense of mystery there. 🙂
