(Vatican Radio) “The whole world is at war,” and the rejection of the “path of peace” means that God Himself, that Jesus Himself, weeps. This was the message of Pope Francis to the faithful following the readings of the day at Mass on Thursday morning in the Casa Santa Marta.

“Jesus wept.” These were the words with which the Holy Father’s remarks following the readings of the day began on Thursday in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence in the Vatican, echoing the words of St. Luke the Evangelist, from whose Gospel the Gospel reading was taken.

A world festively bedecked

Jesus approaches Jerusalem, and seeing the city on a hill from a distance, weeps, and says, “If this day you only knew what makes for peace–but now it is hidden from your eyes.” Pope Francis repeated the words of Our Lord to the Holy City, and then added:

“Today Jesus weeps as well: because we have chosen the way of war, the way of hatred, the way of enmities. We are close to Christmas: there will be lights, there will be parties, bright trees, even Nativity scenes – all decked out – while the world continues to wage war. The world has not understood the way of peace.”

War to line the pockets of the traffickers

Pope Francis went on to recall the recent commemorations of the Second World War, the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, his visit to Redipuglia last year on the anniversary of the Great War: “Useless slaughters,” he called them, repeating the words of Pope Benedict XV. “Everywhere there is war today, there is hatred,” he said. Then he asked, “What shall remain in the wake of this war, in the midst of which we are living now?”:

“What shall remain? Ruins, thousands of children without education, so many innocent victims: and lots of money in the pockets of arms dealers. Jesus once said: ‘You can not serve two masters: either God or riches.’ War is the right choice for him, who would serve wealth: 'Let us build weapons, so that the economy will right itself somewhat, and let us go forward in pursuit of our interests. There is an ugly word the Lord spoke: ‘Cursed!’ Because He said: ‘Blessed are the peacemakers!.’ The men who work war, who make war, are cursed, they are criminals. A war can be justified – so to speak – with many, many reasons, but when all the world as it is today, at war – piecemeal though that war may be – a little here, a little there, and everywhere – there is no justification – and God weeps. Jesus weeps.”

The world weeps over its crimes

The Holy Father went on to say that, while the arms dealers go about their business, there are the poor peacemakers who, perforce to help another person, and another and another, spend themselves utterly, and even give their lives – as did Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, against whom the powerful, worldy cynic might say, “But what did she ever accomplish? She wasted her life helping others on their way to death?” He repeated, “We do not understand the way of peace.”:

“It will do us well to ask the grace of tears for ourselves, for this world that does not recognize the path of peace, this world that lives for war, and cynically says not to make it. Let us pray for conversion of heart. Here before the door of this Jubilee of Mercy, let us ask that our joy, our jubilation, be this grace: that the world discover the ability to weep for its crimes, for what the world does with war.”

An Irish newspaper read the above and distorted it into the following which other media seemed to pick up on: Pope Francis: War and hatred mean Christmas lights and parties are “all a charade”

So be warned
Not just here in Ireland. alternet.org/culture/pope-francis-christmas-festivities-charade-world-filled-war-and-hate Where did the word charade come from? Bad translation? I do understand what he is saying but the implication remains. Are we to think that we should ban all festivities? What we learned in the UK during the war when we had so little was that we needed some luxury, some ease, some simple beauty in these dark times. This terrible year we need LIGHT and the " sweet and silly things of Christmas". Some respite from the pain, and to reach out to those in darkness with our Light and Love. If we do not, then who will? Our only hope is Jesus. Only we can bring Light. I am left with a very mixed message from this sermon.

All war considered, it may have been more fortuitous to have mentioned those who deal in abortion - together with the arms dealers , particularly if one is going to cite the example given to our world by Blessed Mother Theresa of Calcutta. The casualties from the War being waged in the Womb dwarf the casualties from all other wars combined. And these government-sanctioned atrocities continue unabated , at a minimum worldwide rate of 40 - 50 million babies killed in their mothers’ wombs every year.

An Excerpt From Blessed Mother Theresa’s Nobel Lecture (bolds mine) :
“…the greatest destroyer of peace is abortion. And we who are standing here - our parents wanted us. We would not be here if our parents would do that to us. Our children, we want them, we love them, but what of the millions. Many people are very, very concerned with the children in India, with the children in Africa where quite a number die, maybe of malnutrition, of hunger and so on, but millions are dying deliberately by the will of the mother. And this is what is the greatest destroyer of peace today. Because if a mother can kill her own child - what is left for me to kill you and you kill me - there is nothing between.”
I would agree that we all need to “pray for conversion of heart” - each day , in fact : Personal holiness always has to be our first response as Catholics. We need to be able to recognize our own sins first - just as (individuals in) the world needs to recognize their own sins before they will ever be able to weep over them.

When we say
,. . . this grace: that the world discover the ability to weep for its crimes, for what the world does with war.
It still isn’t complete: We have to make the personal distinction between ourselves and others in the world ; that we may remove the beam from our own eyes so we may subsequently be able to clearly see the speck in the eyes of our brothers and sisters, so to speak.

In all these wars we humans wage against ourselves, we are getting more help from the devil and his minions than we could ever imagine : Satan wants the utter destruction of mankind , and self-annihilation would be the ultimate indignity to the human race - created in God’s image.

Our Blessed Mother would dearly love to be a most powerful ally to us, as She waits for her children to take up the call seriously. Her intercession can change even the most hardened heart, and taking up a Rosary daily to pray for the conversion of those who promotre and procure abortion and for the healing of those personally wounded by abortion will yield results. It is, above all, a spiritual warfare that is being waged and it should be clear enough today to each of us that we all need to get into the trenches now and live up to our Catholic name : We are the Church Militant - not the Church dormant.

Clearly he is talking about all the terrorist that murder innocent people. The world would be a much more peaceful place if these terrorist would learn the true meaning of their faith.

Even a professed monk living a penitential life of poverty would celebrate Christmas in some elevated and special way!!

Instead of wringing our hands and giving up amidst the somber condition around the world, we should, with prayer and prudence, plan out how we encounter Advent and experience the richness of Christmas. Actually, everyday is a good day to celebrate Christ among us 😉

Jesus is our only hope! May His love shine through you this day and every day.

Usually, I am a pessimist through and though but in light of Pope Francis’ words….

Where can I find the full text of Pope Francis’ homily about this, given on Thursday, 19 November 2015, during the morning Mass at Casa Santa Marta? Someone in another thread said there is an Italian version somewhere.

The people killed by terrorists are dwarfed by those killed by the bombs of the Western powers and by the millions legally murdered in their mothers’ wombs.

Abortion has nothing to do with war. those terrorist killed by bombs of the Western Powers?

If the Lord is weeping over the wars happening today, then he has been weeping the past 2000 years. And for the wars started by the church he must have really been weeping

Actually, He has been weeping for the past 2000 years - over our sins and our refusal to accept what He offers. That doesn’t mean He doesn’t also rejoice with us and in us - everyday. If you have been a parent (particularly one in difficult circumstances) that won’t seem like a contradiction to you.

War at Christmas is most definitely a contradiction. Could you as a parent celebrate a feast with a few of your kids out somewhere being shot at or bombed, while others are safely gathered around the table ? Too often war is seen as the other guy’s fault, but God doesn’t weep less depending on whose fault it is, because He made us all.

The Holy Father seems to be repeatedly referring to those who trade in arms, but I don’t see or hear much discussion of that aspect of war. If people couldn’t make war, perhaps they’d be forced to settle their differences in other ways. People obsess over what travel documents or phone apps terrorists use, but I hear very little discussion about how they get their weapons and supplies. Perhaps we are being asked this Christmas to look beyond our celebrations and give a gift back to the One who gave us everything: a determined and energetic opposition to those who trade in weapons of war…

From what I read he only referenced arms dealers once. Peace can not be achived through surrendering of freedom. This country is at war with ISIS and they use Islam as a justification to go to war. Their stated goal is to create a world that Islam is the only religion. Either the free world wins against them, or they win. They arent at war because the Western World has mistreated them. They are at war because they want Islam to dominate the world. This a the stated objective. They full admit its their only objective.

Abortion is still the greater social aberration , and from the perspective of spiritual causality, it is a far greater menace to our human existence - let alone world peace. Apart from the victims of the slaughter in the womb being totally defenseless , the (continuing) number of these casualties are exponentially greater than all wars combined. Neither is abortion isolated to one particular group: It is global, and it is demonic in its nature.

Before entering into their analysis of satanic initiaives within the devil’s attack on humanity , HOMILETIC & PASTORAL REVIEW , Abortion : Unmasking the Demon provides some pertinent scripture-based context on “weeping” . An excerpt follows:
A clear idea of what results when evil pervades a society is needed. This concerns the justice of God, because our denial of his rights by sin is a denial of his rightful glory. Let us examine the Eighth Station of the Cross. Some stations say, “Jesus consoles the women of Jerusalem”—Hardly! He said to them, “Weep not for me, but for yourselves and for your children” (Lk 23:28). This calls to mind the time he was entering Jerusalem and wept over it, saying: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem…how I would gather you as a hen does her chicks; but you refused!” and “A time will come when you will be surrounded … and a stone will not be left on a stone … because you did not recognize the time of your visitation” (cf. Mt 23:37; Lk 19:44).
The refusal of the Gospel has its dire consequences. When laws are passed that make a society resemble the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, what can be expected? Recall what they got!
Catholic Herald published an article last January entitled Pope Francis says world peace is threatened by abortion

Although they are a problem, I don’t recall reading in the original article where Pope Francis ever mentioned ISIS or even Islam, at all .

Pope Francis did, however , in the OP’s linked article , proffer a rather appropriate passage from sacred scripture (bolds mine) :
Jesus approaches Jerusalem, and seeing the city on a hill from a distance, weeps, and says, “If this day you only knew what makes for peace–but now it is hidden from your eyes.” Pope Francis repeated the words of Our Lord to the Holy City
Weeping for our sins is the theme , and peace is the objective. I don’t see how we can’t consider abortion’s impact in all of this . . . unless we’re spiritually blind. The complete passage (partially alluded to by the Homiletic & Pastoral Review article) about weeping for our sins - in our Blessed Lord’s own words, as he was on his way to offer the Supreme Sacrifice for us , goes like this:

LUKE 23:27-31

**A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him.

Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children,

for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.’

At that time people will say to the mountains, ‘Fall upon us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’

for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?"**
