I’m sure this may be a bit unpopular here, but I believe the Church should retain the Vatican Bank for the sake of financial sustainability. The Vatican Bank generates a great deal of income that enables the Holy See to continue functioning and fund other works of great charity without having to worry about whether they can balance the books this financial year. It allows her to focus on her core job of leading God’s Church and spreading God’s word without having to depend solely on donations.
I know it’s unpopular with some of you, especially if you believe that the money could be used to empower the poor, but I think it’s just the reality of keeping the Church functioning in a world where money is the currency of all transactions. Even if the Church somehow sold all their assets and disbursed all the money to the poor, what can she do after that? What will keep the Church running when the economy turns sour? Is it going to be made up by the collection plate? I don’t think so. Her charitable activities will crumble under a lack of financial sustainability.
Evidently, the problem everyone has here is with the alleged corruption in the Vatican Bank. Like you, I deplore corruption in all its forms, but closing the Vatican Bank isn’t a good solution. So we may have eliminated the corruption, but the institution we were supposed to clean of corruption is gone now, so what was the point of getting rid of said corruption? We would be cutting off the nose to spite the face. There has to be a better way.
However, whatever the Pope chooses, it will be right one.
