New Yorkers clamoring for a view of Pope Francis during his brief visit to the Big Apple now have another shot.

The City of New York announced Tuesday that Francis “will greet thousands of guests in a historic procession through Central Park” on Sept. 25.

The announcement says that tickets will be required and that residents of New York State can enter an online contest to win two, beginning Sept. 3.

Francis is scheduled to spend only about 36 hours in New York, and public events are limited.

While there, he’ll deliver a hotly anticipated speech to the United Nations, attend separate prayer services at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the 9/11 Memorial, and visit a Catholic school in Harlem.

Additionally, he’ll celebrate Mass at Madison Square Garden, also a ticketed event. The Archdiocese of New York announced last month that a short motorcade parade would precede Mass.

He will have a busy 36 hours in New York City. I will pray for his health and safety while he is there.

I"m absolutely in envy of my sibling who lives in Manhattan. He’d better find the time to see the Pope – this is a once in a lifetime type of thing, a bucket list item actually.

I saw JPII in Phoenix years ago. I wasn’t even Catholic then. A great experience.

 Great time of year to be in New York. I hope he takes the opportunity to make a speech - just the basic outline of Catholic beliefs - the media would have to cover it, social issues, immigration, environment, everything. Life is sacred, throw away culture, etc. etc. What a forum to reach the world. Of course he probably won’t do that, stepping on Obama’s toes or something.

One of my favorite stories of a Pope’s visit to the U.S. involved an unscheduled stop JPII made to a little chapel at a Seminary in Baltimore … to visit the Eucharist in prayer.

Before he could go … security released some police dogs to make sure any areas the Pope would go was free of other people (security concerns). The dogs made a sweep of the grounds, including the chapel … but gave a signal to their handlers that “someone was there”.

The dogs are trained to locate survivors in collapsed buildings after earthquakes and other disasters. These highly intelligent and eager dogs quickly went through the halls, offices and classrooms and were then sent to the chapel. They went up and down the aisle, past the pews and finally into the side chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved.
Upon reaching the tabernacle, the dogs sniffed, whined, pointed, and refused to leave, their attention riveted on the tabernacle, until called by their handlers. They were convinced that they discovered someone there.
