Pope Francis told moms it was ok to breastfeed in Sistine chapel

What do you mean outdated? Breasts are considered inappropriate in public even in beaches (not nude ones) women don’t go topless but its fine in Church? Thats a great idea though why not bottle feed for that 1 hour when you are in church is that still impossible?
It is also inappropriate to be naked in front of someone of the opposite sex who is not your spouse, yet it is perfectly moral for a doctor of the opposite sex to see you and even touch you within the course of an examination. There are always completely legitimate exceptions to rules. The context of breastfeeding a baby is not sexual, and in fact, is helping to nurture a growing family. Catholic teaching is very supportive of that. Modesty is a good thing, but care for a child overrides that. It is often possible to be modest AND breastfeed at the same time. However, what the pope is saying is that if circumstances, whatever they might be, prevent you from being modest and you have to disrobe a bit to feed your child, there is no sin in this. They don’t even have to be extreme circumstances. In this case from the article, I doubt it’s possible to just get up in the middle of a service at the Sistine Chapel to go out and breastfeed. I’m certain there is no cry room, and you probably aren’t allowed much in the way of bags due to security concerns. Remember, not everyone wants to use (or can use) formula, and if you pump breast milk, you’ve got to carry it with you and keep it cool. This was also a baptism ceremony, so it’s not like the women there could leave their children home.

Okay it might be “natural” but so is going to the bathroom and well we go to the bathroom not in front of everyone. Is it really that much to expect mothers not to go essentially topless in front everyone during mass. Couldn’t they do it in private or step out for a second or do it at home before or after?
Shame on you for even comparing the two! I am nearly 80 years old, nursed all 7 of my babies and I have never ever seen a women breast feed her baby while being “essentially topless.” Get a life! God Bless, Memaw

There is no reason a mother should resort to bottle feeding just because she’s in church. Additionally, giving artificial nipples to newborns can result in nipple confusion which can cause problems with breastfeeding. The sucking action of bottle and breast aren’t the same.

Yes, my daughter hated being covered up while nursing. She’d always try and pull off the blanket. As much as I worked to be modest while nursing sometimes a little skin showed. If you don’t want to see, look away. It’s that simple. Plus I think that nursing in public sets a good example for the next generation.

In addition, bottle feeding isn’t as simple as “pull out bottle and stick in baby’s face”. As someone who frequently cares for her infant nieces and nephews, I can assure you that properly warming a bottle of pumped breastmilk is not a two minute job, and feels like an eternity when you have an inconsolable baby in your arms.

Apparently you’ve not been around breastfeeding.
  1. With a little discretion no-one sees anything.
  2. If you are breastfeeding you can’t just chop and change from bottle to breast.
  3. Have you seen the paintings in the Sistine chapel?
Exactly, I sat next to a mother in a church in FL, a few years ago, who breastfed her baby. I didn’t have a clue that the mother was breastfeeding until the baby, when finished feeding, emerged from under her clothes! 🙂

You shouldn’t have to suffocate the baby either.

You get a life with your snarky god bless, what you don’t go to bathroom is that above you? You have a digestive system I assume so unless you are an alien it really isn’t an insult to call that as “natural” as breastfeeding you sensitive life idealist.

I’ve never seen a woman go “essentially topless in front of everyone” while breastfeeding, at Mass or elsewhere. Most women are so discreet you’re likely to see more breast exposed with young women wearing a décolleté than a mother breastfeeding.

Before I had babies, I did feel uncomfortable when a woman was breastfeeding near me so I do understand that aspect and was sensitive to it when I was breastfeeding my kids. Mind you before I had babies I was sensitive about lying on my back with my legs spread in the air with numerous people checking me out, sticking their hands up places you would never have dreamed!

:hmmm: Pondering the possibilities …

Francis was tired of people not being able to hear his homilies when children’s squalls echoed throughout the cavernous Cathedral.

Bared breasts modestly concealed are part of the artisitic motif of that chapel.

Babies that young don’t have to keep a Eucharistic fast.

So far mothers have only nursed their own infants. And only infants.

Mass attendance is up for some reason. Particularly among “the very young”. 😉

`I’ve never ever heard of that happening. Give the mothers a little credit please! God Bless, memaw
I took his comment to be supportive of breastfeeding in Mass and informing others who might suggest to “cover with a blanket” that it’s not needed to “suffocate the baby” to be discreet.

When breastfeeding in public is brought up, someone who hasn’t nursed a baby will usually suggest to cover with a blanket, not understanding that it gets hot under the blanket and many babies like to make eye contact with their mother while nursing and will often tug the blanket or covering off anyway.

Oh, I have.

I knew one woman that pulled her entire shirt up, and undid her bra. Someone even just glancing over would have had full view of her breasts. She would then pick up her infant, position him, THEN pull her top down over the other breast.

When he was through, she would go through the entire process in reverse. Set the baby down, pull up her shirt, fasten her bra, then pull down her shirt.

I was shocked the first time I saw her do it.

Yes, I know this isn’t normal. Yes, women should be free to nurse their babies where ever they are, whenever they need to. And yes, there are some women that go essentially topless when they breastfeed.

Don’t know about that. My mother told me I had this tendency to throw off blankets and stuff when there were too many of them. 🙂

Breast feeding is NO excuse for immodesty!! That lady is a rare bird, thank goodness. God Bless, Memaw
