Exactly. It’s always very sad to see Catholics object to respecting other religions.
If only that were what they were objecting to! I’d agree whole wholeheartedly!
Respecting other people, yes. Enough to value their eternal souls? YES! Which is the point. What kind of mercy prefers to reassure people that it is no problem to be comfortable in whatever faith they have—even while believing that there is one path to eternal happiness whose name is Jesus Christ?
Respect their right to reject the truth, but also respect their need to be told the truth so that they might embrace it! At least love them enough to care about that! What does it mean if you believe what we profess as Christians, and then choose not to speak the truth when souls are in jeopardy?
Is it more disrespectful to say, “You were made for more than this life!” and lead people to the truth, or to say, “I want heaven for me, but YOU are fine right where you are…”
We do not worship the same God. The concern is not that he is respectful to other people of other faiths. It is that he is elevating other faiths—other gods—to equal footing with the one true God—the one true God who made very clear that he finds other gods offensive and unacceptable to him.
This is not the Church’s teaching, and it is not open to debate. It is the will of God Himself. “No one comes to the Father, except through me.”
If you watch the Pope Video on interreligious dialog, the concern is not being respectful to other people! Of course that is how we should be towards others! This image from the video sums it up…the leader of the Catholic Church presents Jesus as one equal option among other equally valid “expressions” of belief in God (or gods).
To me it is not just sad, it is tragic, to see Catholics who prefer “tolerance” to truth.
