I think the OP is overlooking the fact that St. Peter had a sword. Jesus rebuked Peter for using it to try and stop His Pascal Sacrifice, but Jesus didn’t object to Peter having a sword the other three years they travelled together.

I believe even the Pope spoke about this recently, even if indirectly. It was about clericalization of the laity. Being a martyr is great and we are all called to that, in one way or another. Sometimes living a regular life is harder than physically dying for the faith, but it still requires dying (to one’s self) for the faith nonetheless.

And someone made a good point about doing dangerous things unnecessarily, presuming God will save us each time. That is putting God to the test.
It is certainly not testing God, it is just not standing in his way if He chooses to act in the situation. No test God, He is going to do what He wants to do no matter what. Like soemone could really stand in God’s way.
