I totally understand not wanting the drug culture to take over, but if there are any good souls left in Mexico fighting the evil there and hearing this, they must feel very abandoned by the Church right now. :bighanky:

It´s kind of slang in Argentina. The term is often heard on tv and in the streets. Since this was a mail he sent to an argentinian friend, I´m sure he was just being colloquial.
Argentina could never become Mexico (for good or bad), due to it´s geopolitical variables, and a very different culture. What Mexicanization means down here is just to prevent narcs to advance in its involvement with the civil society. Not an accurate description, but since many narcs arrested lately were mexicans, the term stuck.

I wonder, too, (and perhaps canis73 and others can speak to it) that the use of colloquialisms in reference to persons isn’t likely viewed as racist, sexist, etc, as it is in the US.

Thanks for the explanation. I wasn’t sure what he meant. Was he talking about the corruption more or less in the Mexican government?

What everybody understood here, is that he was refering to a possible escalation of violence and political corruption. He had talked to several mexican bishops (as he stated in the aforementioned mail) and is very worried of the situation there.

Here´s the email. The recipient of the message is a local legislator that leads a NGO focused in dealing with human trafficking and prostitution. It´s in spanish. Will try to translate it later, if I get the time.

Querido hermano:

Saludos a tu madre. Y, por favor, no te olvides de rezar por mí.

Que Jesús te bendiga y la Virgen Santa te cuide.

Fraternalmente,

Francisco…*

ok, Im not a translator but here´s a quick effort, for those who do not understand spanish at all.

*Dear Brother,

Thank you for your mail. I see your tireless work running at full steam. I ask that God protects you and the alamedenses (members of “La Alameda”, the NGO Gustavo Vera, the recipient, leads). And I hope we are not late to avoid the mexicanization. I´ve been talking to some mexican bishops and the situation there is one of terror.
Tomorrow I´m taking a week to do some spiritual excercises together with the roman curia. A week of prayer and meditation will suit me well.
I wish good things to you. Say hello to your mother for me. And, please, do not forget to pray for me.

Let Jesus bless you and the Holy Virgin take care of you.

Fraternally,
Francis.

Thanks for the translation. Although I speak and read Spanish the translation will benefit other visitors to the thread!

I agree with you canis73. We have a saying “truth doesn’t sin but is uncomfotable”. I got the vibe that is how people and most of the press got this news. People really didn’t get offended. if you read the comments in FB or in the paper section for it people remembered when we talked about the colombiazition of Mexico a while back. Certainly not two nations are the same!

Howeeeever, the goverment decided to make a bit of a fuzz and they ar sending a diplomatic note to the Vatican, saying Mexico works hard against the Vatican. I don’t agree with this, but I guess that is the diplomatic game…😊 Here’s the link.

I pray for this country everyday, and I’d ask you to include Mexico in yours; now that We know Francis is aware of the situation, Im sure we are in his prayers.

Thank you for the link Asorder. As for goverments, most latin american countries, including ours, have huge issues with corruption.
Will make sure to include Mexico in my prayers too (My family and I are BIG devouts of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, due to amazing things that happened, related to my father´s death, a while back. Something I might consider sharing on the forum some day 🙂 )
