Last night on cnn.com it was reported that the Pope will have a twitter account! Any thoughts?

Here is an article so your thread does not get shut down:

I personally feel that the Holy Father does not need to be on Twitter AT ALL. That is far too worldly of the Vicar of Christ. I get the while “meeting people where they are” - but there are plenty of other ways to do that in this digital age without jumping on the Twitter bandwagon. I am actually very disappointed about it, I don’t think it’s a good move at all.

Thanks for posting the link Lizaanne. I have mixed feelings about this myself.

I have no issues with it, think of it has part of the “New Evangelization”.

…think of it has part of the “New Evangelization”.
I’m trying - but so far the jury is still out for me after reading some of the disgusting and vile tweets people are sending to him. This novelty may die down eventually and it will stabilize, but right now it’s really sickening to see what society has become. 😦

I think it’s awesome! It’s a great way for him to communicate with those who seek to follow him. The internet makes him far less removed and distant than he was when I was growing up.

If you’re trying to reach the 18th Century, then you take the printing press and Pony Express by storm.

If you’re trying to reach the 21st Century, then you Tweet.

I think its a positive step in terms of evangelism and teaching and I’m one of the almost half a million people following His Holiness already. Having said that, I was also shocked at some of the messages that others have sent to him. I know some people sadly have no respect for the office, but what some people are posting is just beyond the realms of common decency. Oh well, at least they might learn something.

There is a definite lack of respect these days in general. Can you follow Twitter without being on Twitter?

You can view what is posted, but not follow without an account.

This is the address for the Pope’s twitter twitter.com/Pontifex

He is expected to post his first message on the 12th.

In just 1 day he has nearly a 1/2 million followers…including me. I joined twitter the same day Pope Benedict did…don’t want to miss his twitters! Will he have a million by the 12th?

This one is pretty good:

@Pontifex I’M YOUR BIGGEST FAN, I’LL FOLLOW YOU UNTIL YOU LOVE ME…PAPA PAPA RATZI!

Just some sad losers trying to make a name for themselves on the back of someone else’s fame.

They are of no consequence.

I have joined twitter as a result of this and will be sending him good messages.

I can’t wait for his tweets.

That they are, probably the same bunch who threatened to assisnate Romeny if he had won the election or Scott Walker when he won his recall election in Wisconsin.

Saw this last night and immediately followed him. I have a feeling that there will be filtering by his staff and we shouldn’t expect to see the Pope himself answering every single tweet.

Even though he hasn’t sent a single tweet yet, Pope Benedict had more than half a million Twitter followers in eight languages on Tuesday, the day after the Vatican unveiled his handle
and we wait in silent hope…
This is exciting!

I joined immediately.
I would not dare to tweet…only listen!
