Sigh! I get so tired of seeing this comparison. Benedict XVI is just doing his job. Some people just don’t get it. The people who equated the Pope to Hitler is an example of “How the light shown in the darkness, but the darkness could not comprehend it.”

I copied this sentence: It was a quote from a 14th century Byzantine emperor that sparked most of the criticism: ‘Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.’ Can you or anyone tell me what the Pope was talking about and why did he use the quote anyway. What was his point?

He was condemning, very eloquently IMO, using religion as an excuse for violence.

Note that the comparison was made by a high ranking Turkish official. This should be borne in mind when considering Turkey’s claim to be a secular government.

Here’s the whole speech:

why would the compare him to hitler? according to their leaders the holocaust never happened. why would they view hitler as a bad guy?

Here is the quote in context. Another poster has provided a link for the entire speech which was, IMHO, excellent. The quote is in blue…

Without descending to details, such as the difference in treatment accorded to those who have the “Book” and the “infidels,” he turns to his interlocutor somewhat brusquely with the central question on the relationship between religion and violence in general, in these words: “Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”

The emperor goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul. “God is not pleased by blood, and not acting reasonably (“syn logo”) is contrary to God’s nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats… To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death…”

The whole point of the pope’s speech is that God is LOGOS which means both Word and Reason. Therefore He is Reason and will not act un-reasonably. Violence is unreasonable. Therefore, compelling conversion through violence is against the very nature of God as it is unreasonable.

In context, the pope’s reference makes perfect sense.

Please, take time to read the speech in its entirety.

It is just the Radical Islam religion doing what it has become very good at…playing the mass media to their gain.

It seems kinda strange that muslims go on about that so much especially when considering that Mohammed was a Jew Murdering, Anti-Semite.😃

What is ironic is that many people in early radical Islam of the 20th century were aligned with Hitler during WWII. This includes relatives of Saddam, Arafat, and the ones who control the Temple Mound.

But I thought the only reason they hate the Jews is because of the Israeli government regarding the Palestinians. 😉

Just in general…it’s in poor taste to compare ANYONE to Hitler…we’re fortunate enough there was only one of him

One of many like him. There was also Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot… All have a Socialist bent. 😦

There are also the lesser-known leaders of mass murder - such as the people who lead Planned Parenthood or NARAL. How many innocent lives they must have on their hands.

It shows the sickness of our society that we have “clinics” for the purpose of murder operating legally in the open.

The fact that Pope Benedict is one of the most ardent and powerful supporters of life, in fact, makes him very much the opposite of this Muslim accusation.

I think that as a professor for many years (and maybe still at heart) using a controversial quote as a springboard for exploring the history of Muslim-Christian relations might come naturally to him.
Unfortunately, outside the lecture hall when you’re dealing with the media and the general public, this tactic is not going to go over well.

Muslims always go on a bout the connection betweent he cahtolic church and hitler. Hitler at times professed to be a catholic and the catholic church supported him in instances which is true but that was because they feared communism and saw the nazis as the lesser of the two evils. The communists had just massacared 4000 catholic members of the clergy during the spanish civil war and burnt and pillaged numerous churches. The Nazis in fact did also persecute many christians who were against their policies in germany. They massacred thousands of catholics in poland including many members of the clergy. I do not think that the cahtolic chruch is responsible for everything the nazis did as muslims suggest. They seem to forget that there were also Muslim groups allied with the nazis. There was a Bosnian Muslim SS Division called Handschar which comprised 25,000 muslims. There also was an Albanian muslim SS unit called Skanderbeg which comprised 6,000 muslims.

I never seen a thread last for three (?) years…but I’m new here so what do I know haha
