I’m not so sure. 🙂 It seem to me that the etymology of “worship” makes it rather innocuous. I think it shows that there has been a gradual shift in the common meaning of the word, but looking at the Vatican translation (and Google 😉 ) it also shows that the original meaning ('honor") is still valid.

Maybe the Italian text of that Encyclical will be the tie-breaker:
That might work. I can’t find a suitable English cognate for “colo, colere, colui, cultus.”

What a coincidence! I was wondering if that was the reason for his death as well! Or, that he was going to declare/teach a heretical teaching. God Bless
I strongly doubt
he was going to declare/teach a heretical teaching.
A heck of a lot of shrouded mystery surrounds the death Pope John Paul I, 33 days as Pope

Though conjecture at best some do claim he was drugged and murdered.

Read some of his writings and books about him and you will probably feel differently. He grew up very poor and felt that have many children causes hardship. He went hungry quite a bit as a child. He had written a letter (as a Cardinal) to all his Bishops to tolerate and don’t bring up the Birth Control issue. Be tolerant of it. Quoting from memory. There was no mention of him bringing back old Latin mass. He was on most of the Vatican II council and was very happy with the outcome. Thank you for calling me ignorant that is very Catholic of you.
The important distinction is, before being elected Pope, Albino Lucini was not infallible. So, it is very well possible he may have held erroneous views on birth control. After being elected Pope, however, he could not change that teaching even if he wanted to. From what I’ve read about JPI, he doesn’t seem like he would have been obstinate enough to resist the Holy Spirit to the point that his death would be the only way to prevent something like that from happening. I think the most likely explanation is that he was simply an older man who was in worse health than anybody had thought when he was elected.

It does look like he was certainly a “Vatican II man” all the way. My guess would be he would have handled liturgical issues much like JPII, which is to say he would try to stop some of the more egregious abuses, but he wouldn’t have been as agressive as BXVI in trying to bring things back to where they were supposed to be.

Of course, the whole discussion is really pointless, as the man is dead, and has been for over 30 years. Prayers for his soul would be more productive.

The only mystery known to me is held in the very strange
mind of Andy Greeley - who is now brain-damaged and who,
therefore, will be making no more strange pronouncements.

Andy Greeley’s fiction-publications speak for his interests.
He was not known for spiritual insight - far from it.

Indeed. May he rest in peace. Amen.

I do thank you.

Being told to chill, to lighten up, to ignore a lie (later called a “mistake”), to relax —
it’s a little late for that in terms of my life. Also I’ve been involved of late in Moral Theology
threads and am surprised I didn’t suffer a stroke from some of the anti-Catholic screed.

If someone is not a troll, why would they be offended by the term?
I will always be offended when another insists that a lie about the Church is the truth.

I am not offended by the term. I am a “Cradle Catholic” Catholic school and everything. What troubled me is that you represent the religion I love in that manner to other people. People will always have disagreements about our beliefs. And that is good it keeps us on our toes. It has been going on for the last 2,000 years. At least we can disagree with the other Christians in 2011 and not be fed to lions or harmed in any matter.
Our lord was beaten and crucified yet never uttered one single word of anger. I assume we all believe this. Yet I make a semantic error in my explanation and I read so much negativity. I agreed that Venerate is a much better word and owned up to my mistake. As far as a lie well if you believe that well I think you might be a little critical. One day I hope to be perfect, unfortunately I am very far off from that so please, if I make a mistake again on a post, correct me and if I am wrong I will own up to it right away. Getting back to the troll thing. I find that reference about a non Catholic’s troubling. From Pope John Paul 1 through to the current pope they have sent out an olive branch to other religions. However I can understand, I have had to listen to many people disagree about our faith (even in my own family). Our church isn’t perfect. I don’t argue with them because they just don’t understand. Our sick (for lack of a better word) priests have hurt many people and our leaders have done little to correct it. It is a valid complaint. But again nothing is perfect. It is happening in all religions not just ours but we tend to get singled out. But, we should be held to a higher standard our first pope was Peter. I am just happy all my life I had very good priests and nuns that have help me through life. I have been studying the popes for some time. I have finished with Paul VI, working on JP1 and hope to continue with JP2 and John XXIII and then go back from there. Hope this clears things up. I am sorry I misspoke and will try to do better next time.

Quite clearly, the mis-speaking touched a very hot button with me. Having lived in the USA all of my life and among Protestants for most of my life, I am very defensive when anyone pulls the card: “Those Catholics — they worship Mary, ya’ know.” The very statement fries my brain (been hearing it for 60+ yrs), so if I over-reacted to your words, then I too apologize. Clearly, we worship only GOD.
