Pope may have 'exorcised' ill man, say experts

Exorcism experts said on Monday that it appears that Pope Francis may have performed an exorcism on an ill man on St Peter’s Square following mass on Pentecost Sunday.

According to a panel of clergy specialized in exorcism speaking on the religious satellite channel TV2000’s program Vade Retro, images appear to show the pontiff placing his hands on a man’s head and reciting a prayer to liberate the him from demons.
 
Good to know that Pope Francis takes the spiritual warfare side of things seriously.

I followed the Holy Father’s Pentecost Mass live courtesy of Vatican Player and caught a glimpse of this event. I mentioned it to my husband as I suspected that what happened was as now reported.

The picture seems to suggest that he is anointing his forehead. That’s why I think it’s merely the Anointing of the Sick. I also highly doubt the Pope would be doing an exorcism in the middle of St Peter’s Square (that is where the article sais this was performed, right?).

Jesus did many exorcisms in the most odd places: remember the herd of swine???

Surely the Pope could do the same?

Sure, he could have. I’m just not convinced this was an “exorcism”. Even the title of this article says he “may” have.
 
There is a difference between saying a prayer of exorcism and launching full-bore into the Rite of Exorcism. Anyone can say an exorcism prayer at any time. The St. Michael prayer is particularly effective - we say this at the end of every Mass, since the HHS Mandate was announced. As a bishop, Francis has a special charism of apostolic authority to expel demons, so it is fitting that he should be exercising it. (so to speak.)

Good also if its just anointing and praying for the sick.

I’m glad our Holy Father takes the sick and the poor so seriously.
 
We’d have to see a video of the whole exchange to even take a guess. 🤷
 
I saw a “deliverance” after a Mass celebrated on a one-day retreat. It was not planned, but became necessary.

It is not at all like a full-fledged exorcism of a possessed person. There are people who are obsessed, but not possessed.
 
To me it is like a strong blessing. Healing.
Calling the person inside of the weak body. He is there.

And those Tv programs are cheap entertainment. 😃
 
The Pope simply laid his hands on the man’s head and prayed over him. It was not an exorcism.

The Vatican does not say he did not.The vatican also doesnt say he did.
Fr Lombardi was being very cautious so that people should not misinteprete the pope’s actions.After all the pope was indeed praying for that person and the prayer could lead to anything God wanted it to lead to.
 
My thoughts:

It appears that the man in the wheelchair was physically disabled, not mentally disabled. Notice how he greets the Holy Father just like anyone else.

I think the Holy Father might have prayed some sort of prayer of deliverance over the man and the man reacted very strangely.

It would be interesting to find out if an exorcism was scheduled for a later time.
