*Pope Benedict XVI named St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke to two Vatican offices Tuesday, increasing Burke’s already prominent stature in Rome.

Burke, a canon lawyer by training, was one of eight cardinals and archbishops worldwide who Benedict named to the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, which interprets canon, or church, law.

The archbishop was one of three Americans and one of only two archbishops named to the council. The other men assigned to the council were all cardinals, four of them the heads of Vatican dicasteries, or agencies — an indication of the faith the Vatican has in Burke.

“It’s certainly a sign of confidence and trust on the part of the pope,” said Jon Nilson, theology professor at Loyola University in Chicago.

Burke also was one of six bishops assigned to the Congregation for the Clergy, which regulates*

I thought this might have been posted already, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. Seems like this man, who is only 59, might end up having a significant impact on the Church. I know nothing about this vendor and don’t endorse, but this did make me laugh zazzle.com/archbishop_burke_fan_club_t_shirt-235097642757797286

Cardinal Ratzinger had a fan club, why not Burke?

This is awesome. i love Bishop Burke. His writings are wonderful!

Proved that Burke must be doing something right in order for Benedict to notice him.

Unlike some bishops out there!

Not to jump ahead - just dreaming…

After our beloved Benedict XVI passes on - Pope Burke?

What a hopeful possibility for our Church. :extrahappy:

I love when these threads get posted…

The same Benedict XVI that appointed Donald Wuerl to DC appointed Abp Burke to these commissions…

And yet…

When Donald Wuerl makes a pastoral statement that folks around here disagree with, that fact is shooed away.

Burke runs around with his pompous regalia on and the Pope is roundly praised for the appointment.

I must find your post frommi to be confusing. You criticize catholics here who are partisan by the fact that they are unhappy with the Pope’s appointment of Wuerl, but yet giddy with glee, with the Pope’s appointment of Burke. Yet you yourself criticize Burke by saying “runs around with his pompous regalia” and praise Wuerl for making pastoral statements.

You should not be confused. Just read frommi’s other posts and it should clear things up.

This is really thrilling, partly because I became convinced with the Pope’s visit, that he feels American Catholics should play a larger role in the Church than we have had in the past. I know it’s surprising, but I believe the American Church only accounts for 7% of Catholics worldwide. I may be incorrect with that figure. So, someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I think this article does a good job of presenting the Pope’s opinion of Americans and our future role in the church:

Are you trying to say that political ideology is stronger than charity in this forum? 😃

Jim

Well…I can safely say that there is a myopic viewpoint taken towards some bishops.
If all Bishops were as good and holy as Archbishop Burke, that would probably not be the case.

The great difference between Archbishops Burke and Wuerl is…Burke is NOT lukewarm.

Given that Archbishop Burke recently published a 50+ page analysis of the application of Canon 915 titled

The Discipline Regarding the Denial of Holy Communion to Those Obstinately Persevering in Manifest Grave Sin

I’m willing to believe it is significant that he was just appointed to the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts which acts as an adviser on matters of the interpretation of … canon law.
