Pope Benedict XVI has appointed a coadjutor bishop for the Archdiocese of Vancouver.

Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, currently Secretary of the Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education in Rome, has been named coadjutor archbishop for the archdiocese, assisting Archbishop Raymond Roussin, SM, who continues as the Archbishop of Vancouver…
YAY! Vancouver welcomes its new coadjutor bishop! 😃

They say he is on his way to become a cardinal. 👍

I just checked. Archbishop Roussin will be 68 this month. That is 7 years before the mandatory retirement age. Is there something I am missing here?

The Abp has been fighting a rather public battle with clinical depression…so I would suspect he’s looking for an early out.

No, no, a coadjutor archbishop is there to help the archbishop of the diocese, not to take over (though he does take over after the current archbishop’s retirement). I hope this has cleared any misunderstanding.

Who knows when Archbishop Roussin will retire, but for the moment, he was probably looking for help due to his health, and the Pope knew this.

Perhaps he would be re-appointed or made a cardinal? I don’t know, really.

I would LOVE a Cardinal here, I would hang out at the Cathedral everyday hoping to get even just a small glimpse.

Archbishop Roussin can, and will, remain our Diocesan Ordinary until he resigns, retires, or, perhaps, is moved to another See. His health problems may have limited his stamina, but not his resolve and effectiveness – ask the phone company that decided to market porn on cell phones on an on-demand basis, and dropped the idea when he spoke out about it. But I’m sure he could use a helping hand.

And there’s plenty of room for two “heavy hitters” in these parts. The Anglicans here abouts bless same sex “unions” and deny that marriage is any business of the church at all; BC itself was the only area of the country where the top selected religion category in the census was “no religion”. The environment is not secular humanist, where there is indifference to religion; it is atheistic humanist, where there is a real animus towards religion.

The good new is that, with these two “heavy hitters” as Diocesan and Co-Adjutor Archbishop respectively, we are possibly one of the best served Archdioceses in the Western Hemisphere with respect to Episcopal incumbents. 👍 😃 And that’s saying a lot, given the number of quality appointments that have been made of late.

Blessings,

Gerry

Vancouver is blessed to get Archbishop Miller,in 1988 then Fr. Miller presided over our wedding.
We still each year watch and listen to the video of our wedding, what a great homily he gave.
I truly feel he is a cardinal in the making !

Trick

Could be, although we’ve never had a Cardinal Archbishop in Vancouver.

It was interesting to read last week’s archdiocesan newspaper. The instigator of getting a second episcopal presence in the Archdiocese was Archbishop Roussin himself, who has committed himself and the Archdiocese to a very ambitious program recommended by the synod, and wanted help. Since education is big in that program, they gave him a good helper indeed.

Blessings,

Gerry
