From *Yahoo! News * (07-09-2010):

“VATICAN CITY – Pope Benedict XVI on Friday named a senior Vatican official to run the scandal-plagued Legionaries of Christ after an eight-month investigation of the order.”

“It is the latest in a series of moves aimed at shoring up the church amid a worldwide clerical sex abuse scandal.”

Using Yahoo! as a good news source for anything about our Catholic Church is like using the Grand Wizard of the KKK to report on racism in America!

Sherry: My aren’t we a bit negative on our sources of news.😉

Actually, the source for the Yahoo! story was:
VICTOR L. SIMPSON, Associated Press Writer – Fri Jul 9, 7:56 am ET

I found the same basic story on the subscription side of today’s Wall Street Journal, but didn’t want to show that link since a subscription is required to view the entire article.

Why did that other guy who started the Legionaires have so many problems? Was he a fraud all along, or did the power corrupt him?

It seems that he was a fraud all along, as much of his spiritual writings were plagiarized, and the history of abuse seems to go back to the beginning. 😦

Being appointed Papal Delegate, as the article states, is quite different than “directing” the movement.
I believe this is a poorly written article, with many assumptions. It remains to be seen what will be the plight of Fr. Alvaro Cocuerra. I think he is a holy man, and an exceptional leader. He was elected shortly after the primary investigation was completed and has faced this scandal with obvious grace. There are many holy and good people in this movement, and we shouldn’t jump to conclusions. It is scandalous and irresponsible.
