VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI on Friday named a senior Vatican official to run the scandal-plagued Legionaries of Christ after an eight-month investigation of the order.

To what extent will all this affect Fr. Maciel’s cause for sainthood? There are those who believe that certain churchmen are trying to frame him with the accusations against him.

It seems most likely to me that the cause has been deep-sixed or at least put on the back burner.

Um, I hope this wasn’t a serious question.

If it was, perhaps you should read the Vatican statement from May 1, 2010 (link here).

An excerpt:

*The apostolic visit was able to confirm that the conduct of Fr. Marcial Maciel Degollado has caused such serious consequences in the life and structure of the Legion that a profound review is needed.

The extremely serious and objectively immoral behavior of Fr. Maciel, confirmed by incontrovertible testimonies, in some cases constituted real crimes, and manifest a life devoid of scruples and authentic religious sentiment. *

I’m sorry, but with a statement like that, coming from the Vatican, you can pretty much take it to the bank that there isn’t ever going to be any cause for canonization.
