I am starting this thread in response to a request by some members of another forum “modesty”. These members claim that Pope John Paul the Great, was not Catholic. I am very interested in this, and more than a little appalled.

I would not say that Pope John Paul II was not Catholic. We have no authority to judge the Catholicity of the pope himself and certainly we can not judge his motives. However, we can judge the actions of a pope and some of John Paul II’s actions were not Catholic. Two that come to mind immediately are his kissing of the Koran and his two inter-religious prayer meetings at Assisi. I think it is important to recognise when a pope does something that the faithful should not emulate, but there is no point in harping on it. The best thing we can do is to pray for the pope, that his faith not fail and that he confirm the brethren in that same faith.

I see no issue in kissing the Qu’ran. As long as it was done out of respect, not reverence it’s fine. And who are we to say that parts, maybe not all, of the Qu’ran is divinely inspired? I think PJPII’s ecumenical efforts need to be applauded, not criminalized. Especially when it comes to Muslims and Jews, we all worship the same God, do we not?

looks like you encountered a false Sedevaticantist site. Stay far away from those ninkapoops

Who are we to say parts of the Book of Mormon are not inspired? We are not to say the Church is to say which is the Pillar of truth. The Qu’ran is not divinly inspried because it brings souls further away from Christ and not closer which is not something God would inspire. I also do not have anything against Pope John Paul II. I think he was a great Pope and a great example of how one must love their fellow brethren.

The Koran is blasphemous in what it says about our Lord Jesus Christ. We must respect those who adhere to error but we can not respect error itself. If John Paul II’s ecumenical efforts were to bring into the Catholic faith all those who are outside of the Church then of course I would applaud them. But, if ecumenism only confirms others in their erroneous beliefs then it is a false ecumenism which was condemned by several 20th century popes.

The Muslims would most certainly disagree with you on this one.

I am apalled that the honorific the Great is being thrown around again in this fashion.John Paul II is more than enough as an identifier.

As far as him being Catholic he most assuredly was and he was a validly elected Pope.

Everything else is subject to personal interpretation.

Anything composed by a pedophile deluded by demons cannot said to every in part or whole to be inspired by God.

Hmm, the parts of the BOM that were copied from the KJV were (at least, originally) inspired. I wouldn’t say the same about the parts that were made up.

I’m unfamiliar with the exact protocal that leads to an honorific becoming attached to any Church dignitary’s name. Beyond that, and agreeing with the observations that he was the validly elected Pope of the Catholic Church, I frankly am** appalled** that anyone (on this sub-forum in particular) claiming to be Catholic would insinuate some spiritual failing or lack of genuine participation or membership in the Faith of which JP II was the divinely inspired leader for so many years. Challenging a Pope’s status so irreverantly and without overwhelming and unrefutable evidence impresses even me, ordinarily more liberal on all things legalistic, as bordering on the heretical. I can’t begin to describe how offensive I find this exercise.

Of course JPII was Catholic. Popes are not impeccable. If sinning – or committing imprudent actions, e.g. the Quaran incident – diqualifed poeple from being Catholic, the Church would have no members left!

As for the incident in question, there are several possibilities:
  1. Perhaps JPII thought that kissing a gift was the proper thing to do in that culture.
  2. Perhaps he didn’t realize it was a Quaran and thought it was an Arabic translation of the Bible.
  3. Perhaps he knew it wasna Quaran and kissed it to show respect for the little Truth it does contain (e.g., Jesus was born of a virgin).
The bottom line is that those who claim JPII wasn’t Catholic are claiming they are without sin and throwing stones. Last I checked, Jesus condemned that practice.

Kissing a gift IS, as far as I have been told, a proper thing to do in that culture. (depending on the gift I suppose - you wouldn’t want to kiss a pet animal that was a gift or anything!)

In that context it’s a bit liike great-auntie Ethel giving you a hideous hand-knitted three-sleeved sweater for Christmas, and your wearing it for the rest of her visit to make her happy.

Absolutely you run the risk of people thinking that you actually LIKE the sweater (and even the risk of getting another one for your birthday or something) but that’s your call.

People slandered Christ also…Christ said in the sermon on the mount you are blessed when you are persecuted for righteousness sake

I think I may live to see JPII canonized…

Haha This question was born on the “modesty” thread in which the OP declared that there were times when Pope John Paul II was not Catholic. You just inadvertently called the OP a “ninkapoop!”🙂

This is the best statement by wanner47: "The bottom line is that those who claim JPII wasn’t Catholic are claiming they are without sin and throwing stones. "

I agree. There seems to be almost a mania to do so.

A pope can be a good pope and a holy person and still do something that is imprudent or open to misinterpretation. He can even make or allow changes in church discipline that many people object to. But this isn’t teaching doctrinal error; it doesn’t make him ‘not Catholic’.

I think “ninkapoop” refers to the site that was making an issue of Pope John Paul the Great kissing the Coran, not the poster.

There is one site (that shall not be named here) that calls itself traditionalist, but indulges in lies, slander, and deliberate misrepresentation and misinterpretation.

Actually, the “other forum” where “ninkapoop” was used was the thread on “modesty” here on the CAF. A poster there stated that Pope John Paul II was “not always Catholic.” The OP of THIS thread used that as a springboard to this thread so as not to derail the other.
