The crazy thing is this guy is out cold and the cop is still kneeling on him…
Yeah i don’t think the cops were necessarily bad people in the 2016 death, just a bit stupid with too much bravado leading to a preventable tragedy. Unfortunately you don’t get do-overs sometimes.

In the more current case I wish people would put away the alleged racism and start talking about why the police need to subdue people in a fashion that can cause death. Why can’t they just ankle cuff the suspect. I don’t see that they could even get up in that case. No need for a policeman to lean on him.

Perhaps someone with more experience might like to comment?

I disagree with you in regards to the above. I think they showed a serious lack of respect for human life.

However, I agree with the rest of what you say below.

No, because Palestinian militants have launched hundreds of rocket attacks on Israel, intentionally killing Israeli civilians.

I do not wish to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict because it is off-topic, as well as being a complex issue in which neither side is fully right or fully wrong. The police in the U.S., however, are symptomatic of a history of racism in this country. At the same time, they are, I believe, indoctrinated into their own “blue culture” regardless of race. Also complicated but a different issue from the ME conflict.

Rational response award! :medal_military:

Pope Francis really impressed me with his statement. Fair and balanced, to use an overused phrase. Condemns the killing of Floyd, condemns racism and also condemns the riots. I hope he makes more comments on the US.

Not the same. But worrying nonetheless. I imagine there is similar prejudice against people with mental illness.

It’s a human being undergoing harm. It’s more than worrying.

There’s a citation in that infographic, and it’s not hard to find the actual link. https://www.samhsa.gov/data/sites/default/files/NSDUHresultsPDFWHTML2013/Web/NSDUHresults2013.pdf

Considering that African-Americans comprise about 13% of the population, there’s a disproportionate number of them getting arrested. It’s actually good that Vox focused on “that one statistic.” It demonstrates that despite only slightly higher drug use than whites, African-Americans are getting charged disproportionately. In this current climate of “you-can’t-prove-it’s-racist,” those are important numbers. Disparity in the criminal justice system is real.

This was actually a very nice statement. Thank you Pope Francis!
Yes, I agree.

And given that on past threads where I attempted to explore Pope Francis’ views on the USA, my posts got flagged and removed, I will just leave it at that and continue to pray.

As for people who insist that police brutality doesn’t have racial dimensions, I think I’ll just continue to pray for them too.

I will just have to part company with you on that opinion. I think the problem is self-evident, but will not hijack this thread any longer to banter opinions.
