Pope publicly pledges to continue fighting sex abuse in Catholic Church

Today at the weekly general audience in Rome, Pope Benedict spoke publicly for the first time on fighting clerical sex abuse within the Church. The Holy Father told the crowd in St. Peter’s Square about how he gave “assurances of the Church’s action” at a meeting with abuse victims in Malta.

The Pontiff made his remarks following his recent papal visit to Malta last weekend, where he met with eight men who said they were abused by priests in a Church-operated orphanage on the island.

This is a sad event. I don’t know all the facts. I am a survivor of childhood and adolescent molestation. Even though neither abuser was a priest, I still take all abuse cases seriously and personally. If the church with the most truth has such a big problem, what hope is there for any other church, or really for anyone. I just don’t know what to believe. No group is safe. But, the actions of a few do not reflect the whole or the teachings of the Church. Your faith is with God and His word, not that man, who is fallable, will always live up it. Right?

You shouldn’t let such a tiny minority of Priests cast suspicion on the entire Church. Think of all the good Priests out there, I’ve been reading stories of a Priest who helped to shut down over 100 pedophile networks through his non-profit organization.

I don’t believe you can ever be totally immune of pedophilia, anywhere, because these people will try to get in anywhere, it’s up to seminaries who now have better training to do the best they can to make sure such people can never become Priests. And it’s working - reports for 2009 at a low. There where 6 such reported cases in a Church of 65 million members and over 40 thousand priests.

Pedophiles are deceptive and they will seek out ways and situations where they can have easy access to children. Research suggests that sexual abuse is no higher among Catholic clergy than any other area of society ; the incidence is lower.

You are 100 times more likely to be abused in school, than you will ever be by a Priest does that mean you can not send your child to school anywhere? What about the highest rate of abuse, which is among friends and family, does that mean children can not be around their family anymore?

As the Catechism states, “The Church, clasping sinners to her bosom, at once holy and always in need of purification, follows constantly the path of penance and renewal. All members of the Church, including her ministers, must acknowledge that they are sinners. In everyone, the weeds of sin will still be mixed with the good wheat of the Gospel until the end of time. Hence the Church gathers sinners already caught up in Christ’s salvation but still on the way to holiness” (No. 827).

Well, I do know at least two members of my extended family that will NEVER be allowed alone with my son.

Focus on the Eucharist. That is how I have battled through the anger and confusion caused by this abuse crisis. Remember, the Church is greater than those who vow to serve Her with fidelity (and certainly greater than those who have disgraced Her through infidelity). It is our house, and we are always welcomed into it by God. It is our faith and religion. It belongs to us as we belong to it.

The Eucharist is salvation, and it dwells there, in our Church. As soon as I walk into a church my eyes find the tabernacle, and for an hour the scandal becomes a distant memory, as I eagerly await taking communion. For me, I could never abandon the Roman Catholic Church. Why? The Eucharist. It is the source and substance of my hope and faith.

When we stop allowing homosexuals to become priests we will have a dramatic decrease in priesthood sexual abuse. Sorry, I’m not PC just C.
