Vatican City, Jul 20, 2009 / 12:11 pm (CNA).- The Italian technology firm Olivetti has given Pope Benedict XVI a top-of-the-line laptop computer to help him continue writing the second part of his book, “Jesus of Nazareth,” after he fractured his wrist last Friday while on vacation.

The Pope was given the computer on Sunday in the Italian town of Romano Canavese, where he prayed the Sunday Angelus with about 9,000 people. The laptop was presented to the Pontiff by Franco Bernabe of Telecom and the president of Olivetti, Francesco Forlenza.

I thought this was a warm article. I’m not surprised that the Holy Father is not technology saavy. He was taken by surprise to find out that Bishop Williamson’s positions on the Shoah were all over the Internet. I’m saying this as a criticism, just an example of his lack of experience in the area of computer technology. On the other hand, John Paul II used cell phones and texting. He even had an e-mail address.

I do like the idea that the Holy Father writes his work in long-hand. In the furture, we shall have the original documents in is own hand. Unfortunately, we don’t have many of those by John Paul who used the computer extensively. I am also partial to long-hand writing. Having grown up in Europe as a child, we were taught beautiful penmanship from the early years in primary education and very good writing skills.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
