Pope receives tiara from Catholic and Orthodox Christians

I sincerely pray that this horrible use of treasure is sold off and used to provide for the poor.
Then Judas the Iscariot, one (of) his disciples, and the one who would betray him, said, “Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days’ wages and given to the poor?” He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag and used to steal the contributions. (John 12:4-6)

All the news sources state that the tiara was comissioned by a private business man. If so, that makes it a private donation to the Church and none of anyone’s business.

Someone at my Church just donated a solid gold chalice encrusted with a ring of blue diamonds to hold the precious blood on Saturdays in honor of our Blessed Mother. It’s a private donation, not anyone’s business. What are we supposed to do, sell it and give money to the poor and consecrate the Blood of Christ in paper cups?

Anyway, it is fulfilled prophecy…

**Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, For the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; All from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the LORD.
** (Isaiah 60:5-6)

Sorry, but my computer is not made of gold.

The time is LONG past when the church should be accepting temporal items like this. This tiarra is NOT religious, it is a crown to signify that the pope is a Ruler. Let’s not go back to the middle ages, when the Pope was a ruler of vast lands, led armies into wars, etc.

That’s exactly what this kind of a crown signifies.
I am sure it’s still worth something. Do you own jewlry? Wedding ring? a watch? Please lead by example and sell those first. Do you own property? If you do why? We are temporal beings in this life and not truly meant to own anything so if you own property please sell that first and share it to the poor so we may follow in your example.

I can assure you that Pope Benedict is NOT the type of learned man who would wear a crown to display his political station.

Who in this day and age, except for a self-obsessed egomaniac, would seriously wear a crown like that?
Wow! I hope the Pope wears it and that his successor be crowned as in the old days! We should stop trying to do away with the stuff that made us Catholic and embrace them.
Supplicationibus, Omnipotent Deus, effectum consuetae pietatis impende, et gratia Spiritue Sancti hunc famulum tuum Benedictus XVI perfunde; ut qui in capite ecclesiarum nostrue servitutis mysterio constituitur, tuae virtutis soliditate roboretur.

God bless our pope. I feel a great affection for him, especially after reading some of his writings. He seems to have graciously accepted a thoughtful gift.

I totally agree that the Pope is a monarch. The idea that in those 'big bad Middle Ages" (which most people really have not received accurate historical information and teaching on anyway) he was some kind of huge leader with vast armies is. . .well, let’s just say it is not an accurate historical picture.

One wonders if this standard of 'this should be sold and the proceeds given to the poor" (hmmm, I remember a Bible passage that was similar, now what WAS the name of the apostle who said this? :D) had been in effect in ‘those times’ exactly how many poor would have become ‘unpoor’. And how many people would now be hoarding priceless works of art (having inherited from the original owners who ‘bought’ them), charging extortionate prices for viewers.

Of course, if one knew that one’s art would be ‘melted down for the poor’ or sold to the highest bidder anyway, why even bother to create art or religious themed art anyway?

How many treasures of the art world wouldn’t even exist, because we wouldn’t have the big churches (too big, too gaudy. Only tiny wood buildings with plain unadorned furnishings for US)? How many people who worked on those things might have otherwise lived more poorly, or even died because they had no work?

People really need to get out of the simplistic kind of ‘revisionism’ and their skewed views of what the Church ‘should have done’ and consider that not only GOOD might result from their proposal. In fact, the bad repercussions might far outweigh the good.

I also note that it is just a tad, um, TELLING when people scream about ‘the wealth of the Church, it should sell everything and give to the poor’ and are always willing for OTHER people to be doing this yet seldom if ever ‘practice what they preach’.

This is not the “old days.” There is a reason why the past several popes have not worn the papal tiara. BTW, the papal tiara is not part of the “stuff” that made us Catholic.

Huh?

It is an particular tradition of the eastern churches to wear those crowns, not part of the latin rite in the past 100 years of so.

Strange… so the Easterners are allowed their traditions and customs… if a Latin wants his he’s every evil under the sun…

I am confused did Paul VI not wear his? He dies what in the 70s?
Paul VI formally set aside the Papal Tiara in 1963 and no Pope has worn one since. Although the tiara was given to a museum, my understanding is that Pope Paul also donated the approximate monetary value of the tiara to the poor.

You’re simply wrong.

I hope our current Pope will reinstate this venerable tradition.

Nice…and I like that it is “smaller” than older ones…

Long Live Pope Benedict XVI

Though I imagine it will only be a symbolic gift …not something that will be worn

(though perhaps when the Eastern Orthodox and Easter Catholic Bishops visit with their particular crowns and other vibrant head wear…he may break it out…
hey this was given to me in May…)

You’re close, but actually it was Jesus, not one of the apostles:
“If thou wilt be perfect, go sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven.”

We don’t have a tradition of making the pope do things he doesn’t want to. “But it’s my tradition for you to do this!”-- how does that work?

And yet it is no sin to give our goods to God to glorify him (as the tiara does), as also shown in scripture. You might as well claim that vestments are sinful.

I don’t think that’s necessarily what people are doing. Expressing hope that the Pope will do something is not the same thing as trying to make him do something.

It doesn’t matter whether the use of the tiara is currently part of the Latin tradition. The problem is that certain posters are claiming that the use of the tiara is wrong. In truth it’s up to the discretion of the pope. His Holiness chooses not to use this symbol. That’s OK. It’d also be OK if he did choose to use it.

I like the tiara.

As the head of state of Vatican City and the Vicar of Christ, I think he should wear it.
