And men misunderstood the law in Christ’s time. He corrected them. He was the new and everlasting covenant, that replaced the old covenant. But if you want to go to the Old Testament, why did God protect Cain from men?
How about Cardinal Ratzinger in his document:Thankfully for us??? So it was used differently in past times dismiss what our current leaders call us to? I am not going to dismiss Popes John Paul, Benedict, or Francis as wrong. They are more in tune with all Church teachings, and scriptures than I am.
Show me the man of the Church that speaks in favor of the death penalty in these times?

- Not all moral issues have the same moral weight as abortion and euthanasia. For example, if a Catholic were to be at odds with the Holy Father on the application of capital punishment or on the decision to wage war, he would not for that reason be considered unworthy to present himself to receive Holy Communion. While the Church exhorts civil authorities to seek peace, not war, and to exercise discretion and mercy in imposing punishment on criminals, it may still be permissible to take up arms to repel an aggressor or to have recourse to capital punishment. There may be a legitimate diversity of opinion even among Catholics about waging war and applying the death penalty, but not however with regard to abortion and euthanasia.
Also you are incorrect in your assessment about Scripture.
Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew 5:17:
Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
