“The union of love, based on matrimony between a man and a woman, which makes up the family, represents a good for all society that can not be substituted by, confused with, or compared to other types of unions,” he said.

The pope also spoke of the inalienable rights of the traditional family, “founded on matrimony between a man and a woman, to be the natural cradle of human life”.

Pope Benedict XVI is showing some resolve regarding the “Gay Marriage” fiasco in California:

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict, speaking a day after a California court ruled in favour of same-sex marriage, firmly restated on Friday the Roman Catholic Church’s position that only unions between a man and a woman are moral.

I wonder if the California arch(bishops) will show the same sort of resolve or will they be largely silent/overly PC on the matter? Time will tell but as a Californian I hope they rise to the occasion…

The ruling has no affect on the Church and its rules about marriage. What’s to rise to? If you read that opinion, look at the last few pages and see all the people involved. Interesting.

No, but it has an effect on our overall society and I don’t think it’s a good effect.

I expect most bishops will say what they have to and do little more in California. The initiative which could make the fall ballot - declaring marriage as between a man and woman - was really pushed by evangelicals in the state. They got the signatures. It is a question now if there are enough valid signatures to place it on the ballot. There are always questions in these initiatives of the validity of the signature and how they were obtained.

The state will determine in June I beleive if this initiative can go on the ballot.

If it does you can thank the evangelicals mostly.

I don’t expect to see a lot of outcry from the West Coast bishops…their track record on orthodoxy isn’t exactly stellar.

If nothing else, this certainly proves beyond all doubt that democracy is dead, at least in Kalifornya. The people vote and make their will known, but the force of law, apparently, is not in free elections but in the hands of the Supreme Soviet. They can overrule the people any time they wish, evidently.

Considering the Church’s opposition to non-sacramental gay marriage, does anyone expect the California bishops to organize support for the proposed constitutional amendment which would ban gay marriage in California?

I’m not sure about all that, but if it’s true, it’s a shame. Bully for the Protestants and all, but some of the mealy-mouthing I have heard in the past from some US bishops makes me wonder if they are descendants of St. Peter or running for public office…

IMHO every state that does not have the definition of marriage in their constitution needs to place the issue on the ballot. I think that the opening of SS unions opened a Pandora’s Box of evil and it will be hard to put the loosened evils back into the box. And yes, as a Catholic i believe the actions are evil and those that do evil need to be prayed for and loved. We do not have to blindly accept the evils loose in our society now.

I expect Cardinal Roger Mahony of the Los Angeles Archdiocese to be perfroming gay marriages at his cathedral starting on Monday. He’s a big supporter of gay rights.

Best not name bishops. But they mostly in Ca. are going along to get along.

Any wonder Hispanics are converting en masse in this state. They know. And on “moral” issues such as this the evangelicals are feedingthe rank and file. The catholic church is NOT. Read the recent Pew study/report. There are exceptions but the scant few makes you wonder if the Catholic church is the problem and not the solution.

Its politcal correcteness as is “heresy” IMO.

No, but it has an effect on our overall society and I don’t think it’s a good effect.
Starting off right at the top, with separation of powers and the checks and balances that are supposed to result from that. The Legislative branch is supposed to write/enact laws, the Executive branch is supposed to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, and the Judicial branch is supposed to interpret laws (not create them from the bench)!

There’s a BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG difference between a SACRAMENTAL marriage, and a SECULAR marriage.

All that happened in california is that they changed the definition of marriage to be between two women or two men in addition to the traditional definition so that those two people could be legally binded together and enjoy the legal benefits of being a couple.

I am sure that some non-denom churches or anglican churches will perform ceremonies, but they won’t be sacramental. They will just be shows, with a contract to sign at the end.

This has no effects on the magisterium of the chruch which is a private organization that may do whatever it pleases. Now, there will most likely be pressure on us, the archaic catholics, to come around and get with the times.

If any single bishop of the catholic church rebels and performs such a ceremony in disobedience to the church, i would hope they are excommunicated on the spot. Perhaps the bishops will stay quiet on this, but i think they know the line when it comes to this. However stay vigilant.

I think this is a horrible direction for society to take. It makes me shudder to think what things will be like in 10 years, but remember, doesn’t affect the church.

And remember in the end, this is part of God’s plan somehow. He’s large and in charge. Pray!

Of course the ruling has an affect on the Church if it affects society. Every sin causes a ripple effect that extends throughout all people, especially something as big as same-sex marriage.

How disappointing. The Bishop of Madison soft pedaled this today of CAL. He beleives or accepts their sincerity in their decison. The Ca Supreme Court justices. Though he disagres with the decision. it. Like didn’t he have to say that. Lukewarmness from one of the more Orthodox US bishops like his is scary. Like do any of them beleive.?

I know many of you are asking hjst. keep doing so. And praying to be lead - even if out out the Roman church.

What a charade. Like the gay marriage marriage initiative makes the the ballot in in California look at the the witness of the evanngelical pastors. Look at the witness of the Catholic bishops Almoast totally not there.

This summer will play ou,t but if you are wavering as to who is preaching the truth. Just wait. My bet is the Catholic bisops in Ca. will finesse this.ZBut the evangelical pastors will preach Christ.

If this indeed plays then why do you remain Catholic?

Come November ask where the Bisho pof San francisco has been on this. Or LA.

An inivitaive brought forward by evangelicals that should have been brougth forward by Catholics.

IMO - you are being zoomed by the “church”. Again, JMHO.

Same-sex unions are against God’s plan and are against the very nature of marriage, which requires the complementarity of genders. Every Catholic needs to pray that Californians will be able to vote pro-family and overturn the California judges’ decision. And Catholics need to cry out to their pastors, begging that they speak about this issue from the pulpits (according to what the Church teaches). There are many Catholics who abhore the idea of gay marriage but are afraid to offend, or aren’t sure how to articulate our beliefs.

from Between Man and Woman: Questions and Answers About Marriage and Same-Sex Unions, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops:
Marriage is a basic human and social institution. Though it is regulated by civil laws and church laws, it did not originate from either the church or state, but from God. Therefore, neither church nor state can alter the basic meaning and structure of marriage. Marriage, whose nature and purposes are established by God, can only be the union of a man and a woman and must remain such in law.

Ain’t gonna hapoen. The evangelicals will carrythye war on this. Let’s et real, in ome liberal dioceses parishes eouldmn’t allow the petition in their cchurvchees.

Tje witness for Chritsty and the famliu in Calif is witht he evangelials and Hispanics who are converting in huge numbers. Phillipinos too. Have a co-worker friend who is Phillipino who is on the front linrd linr for thi initivr and who has comvetreted 3 yesrs ago tp Asssemblies

That is the fact, Jackj Sorry to put it that way but the church in Northern california is all about legalizing illegal immigrants and mosstly nothing more.

Not prophetic in any way. Any wonder why the illegal immigrants expoused by the Catholic church incrrasingly embrace evngelicalism.

Its all a charade. They don’t believe. The bishops and priests. Why should you?

[emphasis by me] I am not sure if there is a language barrier here or something. This thread is showing that our beloved pope is strong and will just keep teaching Catholic teaching no matter what a few errant bishops are doing. Are you really trying to use this thread to proselytize Catholics away from the Church founded by Jesus Christ Himself?

Please stop your strange behavior.
