Pope Benedict XVI is “extremely upset” that Muslims have been offended by some of his words in a recent speech in Germany, the Vatican said Saturday.
The new Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, said the pope’s position on Islam is unmistakably in line with Vatican teaching that the church “esteems Muslims, who adore the only God.”
Thus, the pope is “extremely upset that some portions of his speech were able to sound offensive to the sensibilities of Muslim believers and have been interpreted in a way that does not at all correspond to his intentions,” Bertone said in a statement.
The words, in a speech Benedict gave to university professors earlier in the week during a pilgrimage to his homeland, angered many in the Islamic world and raised doubts over whether a planned trip to predominantly Muslim Turkey in late November would go ahead.
Leaders across the Muslim world have demanded the pope apologize for his remarks on Islam and jihad, or holy war, despite earlier Vatican’s assurances that he meant only to emphasize the incompatibility between faith and war.
Benedict on Tuesday cited an obscure Medieval text that characterizes some of the teachings of Islam’s founder as “evil and inhuman” — comments some experts took as a signal that the Vatican was staking a more demanding stance for its dealings with the Muslim world. When giving the speech, the pope stressed that he was quoting words of a Byzantine emperor and did not comment directly on the “evil and inhuman” assessment… news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060916/ap_on_re_eu/pope_muslims

God is love, not swords!

That was the popes message in his speech of the 12 of september (the day after 9.11). His message was that God and Logos is not opposite but ”hangs together”. If it’s logical that God is love, it will not be logical to use swords. We have to try to live together in peace with each other, that was part of the popes message. Other ”parts” was that it is important that Europe can’t throw away God at the Universities, because science is more than mathematics.

His speak of the 12. (Vatican page):
vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/speeches/2006/september/documents/hf_ben-xvi_spe_20060912_university-regensburg_en.html

An Israeli Newspaper, ” Yediot Aharonot (16. of september 2006)” tells that the moslems already have started to use their ”swords”: ” Nablus attacks - Two West Bank churches were hit by firebombs early Saturday, and a group claiming responsibility said it was protesting what many Muslims view as disparaging remarks about Islam by the Pope. - Relations between Palestinian Muslims and Christians are generally peaceful, and the attacks on an Anglican and a Greek Orthodox church in the West Bank city of Nablus sparked concern about sudden tensions.” … ” In a phone call to The Associated Press, a group calling itself the “Lions of Monotheism” claimed responsibility. The caller said the attacks were carried out to protest the pope’s remarks about Islam”.

The popes so called apology is a statement from the Vatican: ”The Vatican said on Saturday that Pope Benedict XVI was sorry that his speech on Islam was interpreted as offensive to Muslims.

In a statement issued by the Vatican, the pope said he respects believers in Islam and hopes they will understand the true meaning of his speech” (from “Haaretz”, another Israeli Newspaper, 16. of september 2006).

To be sorry for how people interpret a speech, is not to take back what was said. It’s very important to remember that **the pope also said that he hoped that the moslems got the real message **(and not only their own interpretation).

I think the pope has acted very sensible and intelligent according to the situation. His decision that words are better than swords are quite right according to Ephesians 4:29-32 in the Bible:

” 29 Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. 31 Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, 32 and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you”.

The pope has met this with Peace. The next days, weeks or months will show if catholics and other christians will be met with peace or war!

The whole article in “Haaretz” is to be found here. It’s very interesting because we can read about the reactions from the muslims after the so called apology:

**+May God bless and protect pope Benedict XVI+

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with Thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. AMEN**

Here it is folks. The entire text of HH lecture. Read it and see if you can find where he is being offensive.
I see nothing at all offensive in that speech.

But we are expected to constantly be on tenterhooks, rearranging our speech, our laws, and our lives to avoid offending the sensibilities of certain Muslim elements, while those elements persist in using invective, bombs, airplanes, swords, and who knows what else to offend far more than just sensibilities.

The hypocrisy boggles the mind.

After reading that speech, I cant see how HH was even commenting on Christian-Islamic relations, never mind denouncing Islam. Most people missed the point of his lecture.

. Most people missed the point of his lecture.
Yes, they did! And those to blame for that are the Media! Media makes a fire of it all over the world. The muslems read it and spread the fire! The pope talked about Logos i.e., and people acts like they are unable to think and control themself.

The moslem leaders must learn their people that a quote is a quote and is supposed to be quoted in the frame it was said. To take words out of context is either cilly; or very clever if one wants to upset people and make them act like angry puppets!

There’s not much one can do to avoid offending those who look for offense. But, I agree that it is still upsetting to the rest of us.

:clapping:

I completely agree. Unfortunate, isn’t it, that the free West has to self-censor lest they do it for us?

If I had the cash, I’d fly to Rome and stand out in Saint Peter’s Square with a big sign that said,“Rock on, Holy Father!”

I wish I could buy him a German beer. And then, of course, kneel and ask for his blessing.
