VATICAN CITY (AP) – Pope Francis says that when he was 42 he had sessions weekly with a psychoanalyst who was female and Jewish to “clarify some things.”

It wasn’t specified what the future pontiff wanted to explore. The revelation came in a dozen conversations Francis had with French sociologist Dominique Wolton, writing a soon-to-be-published book.

The 80-year-old pope also speaks of his state of mind now. “I feel free. Sure, I’m in a cage here at the Vatican, but not spiritually. Nothing makes me afraid.”

What bothers him, he ventured, are people with straitjacket points of view. *

Mental health is important. I don’t see any thing wrong with the Holy Father disclosing this. I hope it inspires those who are suffering but are too embarrassed or ashamed to seek mental health help.

And the point of this thread is what?

I’ve seen a few people go to psychiatrists and come back in worse shape than they were already in.

Yep.

Mental health screenings for paranoia, dementia, personality disorders, narcissistic personality disorder etc.

I’m finding it odd this is a story though.

The Church isn’t against psychology. I know a psychologist who used to screen the men in the diaconate program.

Father Groeschell was a psychologist. The film The Exorcist was made in the early seventies. It featured a Jesuit/ psychiatrist.

That is the truth. Or a psychologist or a counselor.

Those seeking mental health help are sometimes in a vulnerable state of mind.
